It's German. I think it's a 20 year military service stein but I can't make out the rest of the info. on it other than his name/rank, Lt. E. Mayer maybe. I'm also wondering if it is a period piece or something given to a vet years later in remembrance of his service?

Nice.
Any silhouette in the bottom when you raise the lid out of the way and hold the bottom up to the light for a peek?

So far, I have found similar "styled" steins from the late 1800's so I believe the date corresponds with the age of the piece. I didn't even notice the engraving on the lid until after I got home. I actually saw what looked like an etched signature of some sort on the glass. That was part of why I bought it, besides the price. I was a happy camper when I discovered the writing on the lid!

" St. Fr. F.W. (From) the second platoon w/ Leutnant E. Mayer for the 20 year Service Jubilee 1 Bat(tallion) 1 C(opmagny)"

"St. Fr F.W." I dont know, yet strongly thing "F.W." means Feldwebel = Seargeant. Perhaps Staff Seargeant or something. Guy should have be little of NCO rank advanced after 20 years.

Thanks. That's kind of what I was looking for. So he was a Sergeant of some type in the Imperial Army. Looks like he joined shortly after the unification in 1871. It's not the usual regimental stein. Perhaps a private purchase by a family member.I have found the maker to be Theresienthal Glassworks with a cut star and thumbprint design. Found another here... Theresienthal [4] Glass beer steins; Prunts, Pewter Mounted, Verses, Jugenstil. « Steve On Steins
