Found this token at my favorite spot today, here in Southern California.
There is not much at all if any info online on this exact token. Only 1-2 pics online.

front: Troop A 4th Cavalry,
back: The brunswick Balke Collender CO (Picture of a billiards table)

I would like to know the history behind this token. Were they only given out to the troops, etc.

Any input is greatly appreciated

Hello nopsia. That is a great token. I am interested to see if there is more info on it posted. The Brunswick site shows info on Balke Collander going back into the mid-1880's.

Good luck with your research and HH. C9

HEY THERE NOP , NICE CALVARY TOKEN YOU HAVE GOT.

I found one of those Brunswick tokens a few years back, but it has the name & town of a tavern on it. They did issue various kinds for advertising with the Brunswick logo on one side, & a business or organization on the other. If you put there tables in your saloon or store, you were given tokens with your business name on them. Mine was a "good for 10 cents at the bar". Maybe they did honor the 4th Cavalry with an issue.

Awesome find

Jerry Adams, who I think may be on TreasureNet, wrote up a great story about the 4th Cavalry and the tokens they used. It is in the March 2010 issue of Talkin' Tokens, the monthly journal of the National Token Collectors Association (tokencollectors.org). Most of his article chronicles the activities of the 4th during the Indian Wars through the Spanish American war and to the beginning of WWI. The token you have is one of three different Troop A pieces he pictures. He states that "From 1884 through 1886 (the period when it has been shown that this token was made), the 4th Cav was in conflict with the Apache Indians in Arizona Territory."
