A friend and I took a drive out into the boonies and hunted a section of trail that used to be part of an old railroad line. It runs out in the woods and by a lake. After spending 2 hours on the railroad trail, and finding nothing except old iron trash, blobs of melted metal and all sorts of alien spacecraft parts, we decided to search the small swimming area on the lakeshore. On the hike over to the lake, we stumbled across an old derelict house, literally in the middle of nowhere! The house is completely cut off from civilization, about 3 miles from any roads. It just sits there in the woods, off of a small trail. We tried the area around the house, and moved on to the lake after digging up more alien stuff and some old beer cans, and hit the jackpot at the swimming area. We both scored lots of clad, and I got a paper thin, almost unidentifiable wheatie, and a bent up, but nice looking (and heavy) sterling ring. It's bent all out of shape, and missing the big stone that was in the middle, and 4 of the 6 smaller stones that went around it. Sorry for writing a book! Thanks for looking, and here are the pics:

Here's a pic of the old house we found. We're going back in the spring to look for old bottle dumps near it.

Jake, well to be honest, no, I'm not sure it was actually a house. It looked like one, and there was a lot of old household debris lying around. We did a quick search around the perimeter looking for a possible dump site (to no avail) but did find some old broken glass jars, an ancient broom, and some other household debris. Plus, if you look on the left hand side, you'll see the 1940s era fridge/icebox lying on it's side. Just a guess, but I'd say a house, or maybe just an old hunters lodge??

The way the concrete foundations go into the hillside like they do, it make me think more along the lines of a mining operation. Just a thought though. ???

Too bad the ring is all bent up
it looks like it was really fancy. HHs

Yeah, I have another one all bent up similar to this one. I may just hit a jewelers this week and see about having them repaired and polished. It's not like their 22K or anything, but if it doesn't cost too much, I might do it. Maybe have them replace the lost stones on this one and give it to the wife to make up for her handling our 4 kids while I go hunting, lol!

Possible use to the building, could it of been like a base camp for ice harvesting even further back then the refrigator dates? How close is it to the lake?

You did a lot of digging today!

Very nice finds!!! Thanks for the pics!

Nana ;)

Nice day out, the exploring part always make those trips great. HH, Mike

Zumbro, ice house didn't occur to me, but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. It close enough to the lake that you could throw a stone into the water from where I was standing when I took the pics, if the trees weren't there. I'd say no more than 30-35 feet through the trees from where I stood to the water. I guess hunters shack or ice house make sense. We are going back in the spring to look for dump sites, and I'll keep an eye out for further clues as to hat it was. Thanks everyone for the ideas!

Cool finds, looks like a good place to hunt!
