"Treasure of the Wild" ... Morels & Swift legend

Its Spring time again, and with spring comes mushrooms. Their really named "Morel" or otherwise called "Dry Land Fish". These are great to eat or sell, at last years mushroom festial in Irvine, Ky. they went for $80.00 a pd. Id rather keep and eat myself there that good!! I learned how they grew and when to hunt for them from my late papaw. The signs have to be right, Ask any old timer, he'll know about them and probally tell you a few storys about them of his own. I was hunting these when the Swift ledged hit me head on, so now each spring im hunting both...loland remember Flick then Pick
These are truly Treasures of the Wild, here are some pics of my finds so far in 2009'.......... -KI-

If you have any finds please share....

Re: "Treasure of the Wild"

;D  YEP! They grow on ya, when you are NOT looking for 'em... OR "sprout out" after you pass 'em; HA! Found quite a few in the mountains of Tobacco Row, in Amherst County, Va. ("SNEAKY" little "devils" :D ...); took 'em home... fried 'em up in heaping butter... YUMMMMMMMMMMM! :coffee2: :tongue3:  :icon_sunny: 8)

Re: "Treasure of the Wild" ... Morels

Hey Reb... yes very tasty :P
There just starting to sprout, got about 3 more weeks to find these little buggers. Ate a bigg mess last night. Been finding mostly blacks and greys. I have found a few yellows as well, but im waiting on those monster whites to show themselves....happy hunting

Re: "Treasure of the Wild" ... Morels

Yes.....I couldn't agree more. It's like finding treasure too.I've found some real monsters before. At the end of the day, when your walking out of the woods with a sack full, you know you hit the jackpot.

Here's how I prepare them.Soak them saltwater 4 hours to even overnight, not too long or they get real soggy. Then I slice them into halves, long ways.Dip them in a beaten egg,put it in a bowl of Italian seasoning breading. Then Fry in butter/oil.

mmmmmm.....good stuff

So....Any else like to share recipes....thanks

Re: "Treasure of the Wild" ... Morels

;D :coffee2: :tongue3:  THANKS, for sharing... Around home (near Shenandoah National Park/Blue Ridge Mountains/Shenandoah Valley, Va.), those "devils" are called MURTLES (as in Turtles), MIRACLES... I just call 'em YUM YUMS!
:D   :coffee2: "Google" RECIPES - MORELS MUSHROOMS

Re: "Treasure of the Wild" ... Morels

Thanks Rebel....I'll have to google that....

Just another lil tidbit.... In the book of Exodus when the Israelites were wondering through the Wilderness. There were miraculously fed with Manna(heavenly bread) It's believed that the manna was mushrooms, although a different type.

Just a lil food for thought ;D

Re: "Treasure of the Wild" ... Morels & Swift legend

Guys I LOOOOOVE Morels (or dry land fish as most call them in this area, or brain-heads as my daughter calls them).

Too bad I missed the prime days for them this year, as I was at the KGC vault chiseling away rocks with a friend of mine.

I, as well, ONLY eat the ones I find and was able to buy some last year for $15 per lb. extra at a flea market close by. I wish I would have bought the entire cooler full he had at that price, as I dried them out and they were almost as good as fresh morels when I ate them! :P
