I see the mysterious "F" symbol and its variations on the Peralta Tesora Mappa and stone tablets related to the Spider Rock treasure. The map and the stone tablets are recognized to be of Spanish origin, but the map and the stone tablets are assumed to have been made at different times by different authors.

If the above assumption is true, I'd guess that the "F" symbol comes from a codified system of symbols that was conceived by a governmental or church source and then taught/distributed to those who would be exploring for mineral riches in the new Spanish land holdings in the American southwest. The system of symbols would ensure uniformity and that those other than the original creators of the maps/tablets could readily decipher the meaning of the symbols. An official, royal edict could have guaranteed the univeral usage of the coded symbols.

The meaning of the "F" symbol is unknown to me, but the fact that it appears on the map and tablets seems to indicate that it does not relate to anything specific that cannot be found in all the locations indicated on the historic artifacts. It could relate to something common to all, such as direction, distance, or time.

By the way, on the Peralta Tesora Mappa I see the small circles to the right of the "F" symbols as indicating rock cairns/monuments that no longer exist. The map seems to show alternate ways to get to the same location.

If it is an F, then 2 of them on the Clyde Spider rock are shown backwards. (?)
I wonder if the F is actually a non-alphabetical character instead of the actual initial F. The open side of the F may be a directional indicator.
