Oh brother....got down to a well known treasure beach. I knew they were in the middle of a beach renourishment that will seal this spot under rock, brick, and concrete. There was a slim chance that between back hoes and excavators that I might be able to sneak in and get a coin or 2 before this spot is done for good !! Well it was worth it and I got a 1659 marevedi and a cut spanish silver in the same hole...within 4 inches of each other !! What a thrill !! 20210215_193300.jpg

Both coins are uncleaned and as dug.....you can see that they were free of saltwater for the most part, as they are not to corroded. The marevedi is killer with all sorts of counter stamps and markings ive yet to decipher. Ill have to start researching to understand what im seeing. I guess there is a slight chance that this coin is a 1559...?? Not quite sure yet. Not sure how these coins were made but almost looks hammered. 20210215_193231.jpg20210215_193217.jpg
The cut silver does not show much right now but I can see some details struggling to come out. The faint print of a cross is there under a sulfide crust. Distinct cut marks on 2 sides....still wondering what denomination it is....not sure if ill ever know. What a thrill...getting right up in there during the dig and snatching some coins out !!20210215_142334.jpg20210215_142344.jpg
Big shout out to islamoradamark.....thanks for sharing the excitement with me and digging with me !! Wooo hoooo !! Treasure coins !! Thanks for taking all those really good pictures we treasure hunters love that stuff

I wonderd if some one would pick up on that....old timers swear there was a 1600s wreck close by also. There are quite a few wrecks in the immediate area....my oldest coins in the keys have all come from here. 1621, 1652, and now 1659. Last summer I searched for this 1600s wreck offshore. I ended up finding a beautiful 1800s schooner wreck !! 1800s and still loaded with giant Hogsehead barrels....the barrels are gone but the contents are fused into the shape of the barrels !!Screenshot_20190909-094853_Maps.jpg20190909_095240.jpg
The top decks sheared off and slid inshore settling in the shallows. The heavy cargo stuck where she initially grounded. The point of me bringing up this wreck is that....I never saw it until after hurricane irma. What little would remain of a 1600s wreck could very well be hidden here in the shallows. It always starts this way....a handful of mystery coins, and a burning desire to know where they came from. Research in the books has proven that at least one galleon from the 1600s was grounded nearby but was refloated with the help of calusa Indians. Still digging for information on this grounding. This beach has proven to see many sailors, wreckers, pirates, Spaniards, Dutch, and English from very early on. I believe that this beach saw Europeans in the early to mid 1500s !! They don't call the waters offshore galleon ally for nothing !! As the water warms and clears ill be getting out to hunt more wrecks.....2021 has been so good to me so far !!
Happy hunting !!
