Well I know everyone wanted to hear that we were finding gold bars all over the beaches here. But it was not to be. The storm did very little to the beaches here. Remember that the hurricanes of 2004 severely eroded the beaches, in many cases all the way back to the old dune. The county and state in its infinite wisdom and to appease all the rich condo and homeowners living on the beaches, decided to replenish the sand after the 2004 season. They claimed it was for tourism. But yet the county does not promote tourism. They want to keep Indian River County all to themselves. Most places now sport a nice wide but ugly filled-in beach. Not a nice white sandy beach, but this ugly gray pumped in muck. Most areas are filled with a 50-foot wide by about 10 foot deep pile of this mess.
Also all public beaches in IRC were off limits and closed to NON-residents, as in NON-beach residents. Just like in 2004. Once again sighting public safety as an excuse. But yet they allowed the beach resident to go down to “their” beach! They did not drive down the beach and tell the residents that it was unsafe and they could not pick up seashells or metal detect. And we all know about a certain police dept that in 2004 chased people off the beach so they could go down with their detectors and find stuff themselves. (FACT).

Ok, sorry I got a little side tracked…..
But now I will get down off my soapbox and get back to the storm,

Basically the storm was not strong enough to cut the beaches back to their post 2004 hurricane status. I put over 100 miles on my truck the day of the storm, checking the sites. There was NO significant erosion anywhere. I don’t know and did see any Spanish treasure, coins or other wise that was recovered. I think there may have been a possibility of some ½ or 1 reales washing up out of the troughs and unto the beaches, but certainly not any heavy 4 or 8 reales. There were NO cuts even close to the dunes in my area. We did work a few beaches that had cuts. But we only had hope of finding post 2004 jewelry drops. But that was not to be either. All we found was coins, fishing sinkers and junk!

Better Luck next time.

Having read most of the posts concerning state laws and property owner laws and TH'ing, I must say I'm quite surprised. We didn't have these issues back in Alaska (still the last frontier), where state land is fair game for nearly every legal activity, whether it be hiking, prospecting, hunting, etc. Being very new to all this, the idea of a winter hunt and the ability to thumb noses at said property owners sounds like a fun and interesting time to be had. Please let us know when you plan to schedule it??

Thanks!

Count me in! All i've ever dug down there are those darned ol' Barber quarters south of Wabasso but hoping to find the gold one day! If i lived closer i'd definately be in the lane every day i could year round. Be sure and post the hunt date.

I was one of the TH'ers who was fuming >:( about getting escorted off the beach by the Indian River Sheriff (IRS) off the Colored Beach. A friend of mine recovered a nice Gold Escudo a few days previous and I hoped to find one too but the IRS cut that short.
I've been contemplating about hunting the water and surf off Treasure Beach legally.
I'd pay Taffi Fisher for the lease rights. Figuring out how to place a rig to dredge the shallow reefs which got to be loaded with treasure but the surfgods would founder any ship that dared to challenge its strength but there is a way, just haven't figured it out.

To fight the IRS to keep the beaches open will take more then just the Floridian TH'ers but band with the Federation of Metal Detectorists ;) that is written about in Western & Eastern Treasures. They are pretty good in a fight and they got legislators who will back the cause. We are all tax payers and we deserve the right to hunt after storms.
Next they will be enforcing the Antiquities Act and checking your pouches for old artifacts, jewelry and money and confiscate anything that looks older than 50 years old found on the beach unless you are a certified State Archaeologist. There would be such a celebration in Tallahassee ;D archeaology office if the governor ever outlawed all metal detecting in Florida :o . Hope that day never comes. Keep up the fight.

Since when has it become illegal to hunt old Colored Beach? Were you actually in the water? Did they confiscate your MD? I would like to hear more of your experience before I go there myself. I was planning a trip.

That area was dredged years ago but obviously they didnt get it all.

Oops, my mistake, the SLS (St. Lucie Sheriff) ran me off after Hurricane Jeanne and I was hunting where the dunes had been destroyed by the storm. After they land filled the dunes and beach with sand and reopened it. Its still safe to metal detect but everything is buried several feet deep now. You'll just have to wait till the next big storm maybe this winter. I found more silver in New Symrna Beach than I ever found on the Treasure Coast, all silver finds were in the last century after Hurricane Francis. Good luck hunting.

Yes, I remember after the hurricane, St. Lucie County was very tough. Beaches were closed. You can still go there now, but like you say, a little late. ;D

All in favor say "I"

Soon the Atlantic will grow angry, and the dive season will end. Then, every day is a beach hunting day!

My reply is "I"!! The camping gear is packed, fresh batteries are in the MD and the truck is chained to the garage to keep it from going without me....lol.

Lets do this thing Cappy!!

Camping gear? Great idea!! Lets reserve camping spots at Sebastian. Count me in. ;D ;D

"I" Also theres a fellow treasure hunter and local that has Connecticut Mobile Park and RV at 8085 U.S. Highway 1 Wabasso if you want to get on down the road a little and he welcomes all treasure hunters. I run into him all over the U.S. at club and Federation hunts.

Burp.

When the weather stays chilly and people generally avoid the beaches Cappy Z and the Mrs. will be renting a nice room in a five star hotel on the beach. (My idea of roughing it)

Circumstances beyond our control right at the moment prevent us from going anywhere without our grandson.

But this should change in the coming month or two. (Let freedom reign!!!)

I would truly enjoy meeting up with any TNer in the vicinity whenever fate allows us to visit.

Now, where's my can of Macadamia nuts...

Fate has nothing to do with this.Set a date,it was your idea! :) ;) Those guys in Missouri are making me envious and a little jealous! ;D After christmas/hannakuh or before? The later the better probably, give winter(such as it is down here) a chance to stir up a little erosion on the beaches first maybe.

That's exactly where I was going to pitch the tent. As soon as we get a date set we can get the spaces reserved. We can turn it into a weekend TH'ing party. With at least 3 weeks notice I have a very flexible schedule. The longer in advance we have, the more likely everyone who wants to can attend. Someone just set a date and let me know.

Sure is, Sebastian Inlet State Park. It makes all of the coast easy to get to.
