Hello Chagy. It looks like a blank cover plate from an old window or jalousies that would be fastened with two screws. I have only seen aluminum used though. :-\ Just a guess.
Is that part of a screw in the top hole?

Hey BiggyC.,

Thats the thing I have also only seen these in aluminum..its not a screw its one of those things used for the serial numbers on cars I think its called a bin number plate or something like that....but even those are always in aluminum

You mean a VIN number. I don't think that is what it is, but can see where you are coming from.

Probably a brass pipe hanger from a ship(wreck) that has become flattened out. looks like electrical conduit or pipe strap used today. (you will still see the little raised indentation line in todays models) now they are made of zinc or galvanized metal. the piped communication systems were fastened to the walls of ships with somthing similar. thats my guess.

I guess I'm a day late & a dollar short. ;D ;D 1st thing that popped into my mind was the thermometer plate while looking at the pic & strolling down and seeing that several others had the same thought.

The ridge in the metal is to make it stronger. It looks like a rivet on top and the bottom rivet is broken out. It could be a number of things. Being brass would be for corrosion resistance or electrical conductivity.
