Hello All,

Went out a bit today with DiggerGirl and hit one of the Trashiest sites we have hit this year. The later the occupation of a house, the worse the trash. Pre-1900 houses all you have to worry about is Iron. But if the place was around for any time after that, you start to see the Zinc jar lids that always sound like Half Dimes ::)--and that AWFUL Aluminum. Well, we worked hard today. I'll start off this post with a photo or two of the Crap we dug to get our finds. First is a bucket full of 100+ pounds of junk iron. Well over half of it is from this site. Second photo is a backpack, a small bathroom trash can, and a plastic bag full of aluminum Crap. (Not "Crappe"--CRAP!)

And here is the lovely lady herself hitting the fields with Passion in the beautiful fall colors today:

Here's the tip of the day: ALWAYS trust your method. The ONLY way to work a site out is to grid it. If you're gridding, and aren't finding much--keep it up! If you use a method to research--stick to it long enough to get a sense of whether or not it's working. Let's face it--if your method works, don't question it. If it doesn't, then you won't begin to understand WHY it didn't work unless you followed it consistently in the first place. It's the only way to keep "improving your game."

So--after gridding and gridding, and the first backpack got filled with aluminum and junk iron....and the SECOND backpack was getting almost full... and then a THIRD PILE OF DUG CRAP started to stack up I was beginning to feel that we hadn't made a dent in the site. Well...I still feel that way. There is SO much left to dig there. But the difference is that now I have this to keep me dreaming of what lies underneath the junk:

It is an 1851 Large Cent. I was pleased to get a photo of it while it was still stuck in the dirt. :) And she's a pretty one too.

I don't know where my brain was when I posted the uncleaned finds--because I left one out of the photo...but then I left one of them out of the "after cleaning" photo as well! (Must be the Mountain of dug Junk Relics I have laying on every available surface and countertop. ::) The token with the square hole in the first photo I thought might be a Chinese coin, but it is in fact a "Louisville Railway" token that says "School Ticket" on the reverse side. (I will get around to adding a photo of it cleaned up.) I gently straightened it back flat again by using boiling water to make it more pliable. Hopefully DG will add her finds to this post soon.

You had a great hunt. . . and your photos are always wonderful to see. . . I love the pic
of that copper just "peeking" out to see it's first light since it was lost.

Take care,

Thanks for your reply, Funkman--that's a Beauty of a LC on your avatar.

I totally agree....some of my best sites have developed after several trips of digging trash. Nice find!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another good day in the field for the "Trash" Brigade! LOL, My hats off to all of you, packing out all the trash from the field, I hope some of the landowners appreciate it and bet they might be surprised how junky they are in places.

Don

Don,

We always make it a point to Show the mountain of trash to the owners. They are grateful that we haul it all away and dispose of it. Their children love us, because we always bring IH's or wheat pennies back to give to them. We gave them some aluminum 1920s soap tokens last time, which they were thrilled with. :)
