I posted in the restoration forum asking about those but didn't get any response. If you don't mind, how do they work exactly? And is there any worry they could damage relics/artifacts?

Never used them. "southfork" has your answers but i'm going to assume that each side of the frame has a type of clear celluloid stretched between them, when closed they trap the artifact between the two part frame...

It's just two panes of glass with the points glued? I removed the original solid backing to let the light shine through

These little riker type frames purchased off eBay have mylar top and bottom. They worked good for holding points while taking photos or display.
