Got out yesterday to hunt up in Petersburg/Dinwiddie with my buddy Manganos. His house is literally surrounded by battle sites of the Appomattox campaign...White Oak battlefield fought on March 31, 1865, little over a week before Lee's surrender is situated at the end of his road. This area is a jewel. So I left work at midnight got home and was out the door at 3:30AM with about 15 minutes of sleep (I will loose food & sleep for tectin' or as Grubby/Kirk say: "Only the tough get the stuff") Got their at about 6:30AM and we went straight to it. It was a tough day as Mother Earth did not yield much up to us however we both did get a good find that I guess made the day worth all the driving and diggin. Manganos, my bud, has found quite a bit of lead and buttons in the last spot we hit but today it yielded no buttons but a NICE FIRST for Chris, a beautiful Confederate 2 ring Gardner still in the wood. We cut it open to reveal that baby in flawless condition. I think it hit the wood pretty spent as the bullet was not at all dented or smashed. It will make a beautiful display as it is a double rarity i.e. it is a Confederate 2 ringer AND it is still in the wood. I also made a first find for myself. At a different site, I got this really good iron signal REALLY good. Any yall all know how iron usually gives a scruffy and broken signal. This signal was as steady and repeatable as a coin is...only it was iron and was down at about 8-9 inches. I dug out a plug and out popped a beautiful Cannister shot! So, I think this made it worth the day. You have to be willing to put in the time and go that extra mile to find the good stuff. The other items I found were a 3 ringer, a nice piece of lead ingot that was used by the soldiers to melt down into minies and muskets, and a odd little piece of lead that looks like a fishing weight but much smaller and was found nowhere near water. It looks like a bead. Anyway, ya'll Civil War buffs like me will appreciate the grape shot. I will try to get a picture of Manganos's 2 ringer in the wood too! :) What do ya'll think?? Not alot of "stuff" and doesnt look like much, but it was "tough" recovering it. ;) ;) (MORE PICS at Bottom of thread)

Splendid! I like that others here enjoy the relics, and don't hafta find coins all day long to enjoy this hobby!

Awesome story and pics... you're a luck fella to be able to hunt those places...

Hey BaldingBoy, that is cool. I only know three other guys personally that have found one. Do you have another picture. These Grape shot I believe varied in size. Now all we need is the big brother: Cannister Shot! Awesome, I think that is indeed what you have there! Welcome to the Grape shot club ;) ;)!!!

Neither Kindafoundabuckle nor I have ever found a grape shot. He did dig a cannister shot at one of my sites this spring though. I don't know if he ever posted it....KFB you out there? Take a photo of that puppy!

I'd say was well worth it,nice grape shot & the mini in the wood is awesome, don't find that everyday!!!! also nice pics

Kindafoundabuckle come on out of the wood work and show us a pic of that Cannister shot you found. Dont see them often and I like to compare them. I saw some beautifully preserved Cannister at the Battle of the Crater, Petersburg, VA.

I hope you get that cleaned up for preservation. That's a cool find!

Nice work KFB! And thank you for a nice photo. I hope there's a cannister left in that field for me. I've never found one. That was certainly a cool find--cheers!

nice finds! I have a few cannister shot kicking around here...I'll have to dig them out.

That 2 ringer in the wood is pretty sweet. I've been strictly a coin guy, but that picture just just made the whole relic thing a lot more interesting... Very cool.

Congrats on the good finds.

Sounds like a good plan to me. Lets all get drunk and fry my relics! :D

I got the wine Boones Farm (strawberry) and cheese Kraft American Singles. Nothing but the best!

Lets speed up the process. We will just plug it straight into the wall. (mushroom cloud over KFBs house)

Friday night good for you?
