Got out yesterday to hunt up in Petersburg/Dinwiddie with my buddy Manganos. His house is literally surrounded by battle sites of the Appomattox campaign...White Oak battlefield fought on March 31, 1865, little over a week before Lee's surrender is situated at the end of his road. This area is a jewel. So I left work at midnight got home and was out the door at 3:30AM with about 15 minutes of sleep (I will loose food & sleep for tectin' or as Grubby/Kirk say: "Only the tough get the stuff") Got their at about 6:30AM and we went straight to it. It was a tough day as Mother Earth did not yield much up to us however we both did get a good find that I guess made the day worth all the driving and diggin. Manganos, my bud, has found quite a bit of lead and buttons in the last spot we hit but today it yielded no buttons but a NICE FIRST for Chris, a beautiful Confederate 2 ring Gardner still in the wood. We cut it open to reveal that baby in flawless condition. I think it hit the wood pretty spent as the bullet was not at all dented or smashed. It will make a beautiful display as it is a double rarity i.e. it is a Confederate 2 ringer AND it is still in the wood. I also made a first find for myself. At a different site, I got this really good iron signal REALLY good. Any yall all know how iron usually gives a scruffy and broken signal. This signal was as steady and repeatable as a coin is...only it was iron and was down at about 8-9 inches. I dug out a plug and out popped a beautiful Cannister shot! So, I think this made it worth the day. You have to be willing to put in the time and go that extra mile to find the good stuff. The other items I found were a 3 ringer, a nice piece of lead ingot that was used by the soldiers to melt down into minies and muskets, and a odd little piece of lead that looks like a fishing weight but much smaller and was found nowhere near water. It looks like a bead. Anyway, ya'll Civil War buffs like me will appreciate the grape shot. I will try to get a picture of Manganos's 2 ringer in the wood too! :) What do ya'll think?? Not alot of "stuff" and doesnt look like much, but it was "tough" recovering it. ;) ;) (MORE PICS at Bottom of thread)

Re: Tough Day but got a First!

Nice , I think I would have left it in the wood .Cool display piece. Congrats on the nice find.

Re: Tough Day but got a First!

Oh of coarse, we left it in the wood for sure but we split it in half so that you could see the bullet. A display like that would probably sell for $100-$200 dollars with that 2 ringer in it.

Re: Tough Day but got a First!

Thanks Chris! Had a great time. That was a nice piece of cannon ball too. And that 2 ringer in the wood was a superb find

Re: Tough Day but got a First!

that is definately a cool find !! i find a lot of 22 lead in wood around here..

Re: Tough Day but got a First!

Yeah, the metal detectors DO love the .22 bullets ESPECIALLY the Tesoro Cibolas and Vaqueros!! They are GREAT detectors but they LOVE .22 bullets!!!

Re: Tough Day but got a First!

I know what you mean by a tough day Sentinel.....Doesn't look like much but you have to work for these thing's now....Sometime's it'll take me all day to come up with only a few bullet's.Nice find's and Congrat's on your first!! HH

Re: Tough Day but got a First!

Yeap, you are oh soo right CivilMan, it does take time and patience to work out those few relics and lead that havent already been taken. Two weekends ago I hunted for 6 hours for two musketballs and 3 minies.....
That picture doesnt do the grape shot justice either so I may post another one....I am debating on whether to leave the rust and clear coat it or electrolysis it then spray..

Re: Tough Day but got a First!

Heres a better pic......Oh BTW, I brought this in to show my girl, and she said "Oh look, its a GEODE! If you break it open it will have crystallized rock inside!"::) ::) :) :) :D :D :D After I caught my breath from laughing I told her no sweety in fact that is a piece of cannister shot that was shot out of a cannon....She also laughed hard so it wasnt sooo bad that I laughed at her ;) ;) :D ;D

BTW the above is a pic of one of the sites that we hunted and a cool monument to a Pennsylvania Brigadier General.

For finds like that, I could use about a years worth of tough days! Great first on that Grape shot. Have you cut it open yet? hehe HH and I hope you get back over there soon.
