Tot Lots

Is pea gravel lots a good place to hunt? I could see where wood chips would hide things better.

Pea gravel hides the shiny clad quite well in sunlight but it's on edge a lot of times. My older girl and I once got 180+ dimes in pea gravel at a dime toss at a fair site in about 20 minutes. It was crazy.

Now if I could find sites like that once a day instead of once....

I prefer pea gravel because it's more then likely to be drier and when I find a target with my coil it is generally easier to just move my foot side to side and wipe away the top inch or two of pea gravel and sometimes the target is right there without digging. If it's a newer coin you have nothing to worry about but if it is an old coin or a nice ring, you might scratch it this way. You could also get down and pin point it and the move the gravel with your hand gently.
The bark tends to be wet and the mineralization is a bit different on wet bark rather than dry pea gravel. I seem to do more digging on the bark. I have not quite got my DFX down to a full understanding yet. Have fun. Dave P.

worse ones are those that have carpet over rubber padding. I've lost 3 of my favorites because the city did that. Pulled the sand/mulch out and put this astroturf crap in that nothing goes thru.

I'm gonna have to hunt the outer edges where the parents sit while the kids are playing I think. :dontknow:

I've been hunting the tot lots for over 20 years. So far I've dug out over 200 pieces of gold jewelry. What I've noticed is that most of my success come from the schools that have the highest percentage of Asian and Hispanic kids. For some cultural reason the Asian and Mexican kids are really decked out in gold jewelry. They are wearing gold rings, gold bracelets, and gold chains with gold religious medallions. All this stuff ranges in 10K all the way up to 24K. My advice is just find the schools where the Asian and Mexican kids are, that's where the gold is! :icon_thumleft:

That's a great idea, we have a family next door to us who are mexicans, and all the kids have great gold jewelry on, even the toddler boy who is about 3 years old! Sooner or later, I just know one of them will lose something! LOL :icon_sunny:

Well, the pea gravel delivered today!...........some high dollar stuff ;D

Nice finds and keep it up! But please hide the corroded and chewed up pennies from me. I get nightmares from them! :o The guy at the donut shop finally told me to quit trying to pass my crummy money off on him. Argh.

You are exaclty right..I have been hitting some Ethnic areas in my "hood" :laughing9:.. And i do find alot of coins and my old gold pieces...One thing is..Nobody really likes going to these places because most of them have homless people sleeping in the pavillions..But where i live there are so many parks to choose from..I usally either carry a piece with me..or find the Parks where the cops are hanging out..the Police would much rather see me walking detecting then the homless prowling around.. Ive also became freinds with a few of the cops and they think its cool what im doing :headbang:.. Nothing beats having the Police on your side :tongue3:

Ah, absent minded, irresponsible children.

I love them all. ;D

Look under nice shady trees!!! On a small park down the street I searched under a big shady tree and found 1 silver dime, a ton of coins making 10 bucks! By far the best part was digging up a nice sterling silver horse brooch and a buried pile of 50 pennies!!! On the same park I also found a silver 1919 dime.

I don't really do tot lots anymore but I use to though. Besides clad and junk jewelry I've found one gold ring and two gold bracelets, one of which was returned to a lady who came up to me in a panic asking if I could help with my detector.

I think I've found 3 silver rings in tot lots, no gold yet. I like to detect the swing areas. Of course I do under the swings, but I picture kids jumping off the swings, like I used to do as a kid, hitting the ground and rolling. That is where the coins fall out. So, 5 - 10 feet away from the swing depending on how high the kids takes off. Also any bars that a kid can hang upside down is good for coin spills.

I just found a sterling silver ring!!! Small run down park with weeds growing in the sand.... you never know where treasure will pop up!

I have 3-4 Town fields I do each year-- One has a wood chip covered tot lot I have passed up
the last 3 years--this yr I wandered thru it and took 9 coins off it in 20 min.--Perry

I walk my dog early in the morning at sunrise and I often see young people teens to mid 20's in the tot lot just sitting or talking or sometimes goofing around on the playground equipment. I think they just have good memories of playgrounds and just naturally end up at the playgrounds at the park. What I don't understand is what are they doing up at the crack of dawn.

Like any location - you never know. I nailed 3 Canadian dollars bing, bing, bing in a wood chip tot lot a while back. Don't know how they got there, but they ended up in my pouch.
