I was diggin a weird signal yesterday and ended up diggin up a small tombstone. I'm not sure if the small piece of iron had anything to do with the stone but that's how I ran across it (about 8-10"down). It was in my back yard and the stone is marked with only "E.E." (no date). After looking at the stone, I thought it looked familiar. There's a brick/rock pile on the side of my house that has a stone that matches it. It's the same size, same type of stone and is engraved the same (both have the last initial E.). I'm trying to figure out how old they are and who they might have been?

So you may have the remains of a family crypt by your house? Can you give us a pic of the brick pile?

The iron/metal piece resembles those used to hold forms when pouring concrete.
Some are left after the job like in basements , or they are struck with a hammer and broken off to leave a flush wall.
History of your site may reveal if a stone mason may have lived there before.
There have been instances of discarded , (rejects during making them) tombstones/monuments being re-purposed too.

I could see it being any of the above. Looks like old aged white marble to me.

Foot marker for a grave? I've seen them here in Georgia at older cemeteries but, I do not have a picture to show of one.

Sounds like your house was built over a graveyard! Ever hear any weird noises at night knocking from inside the walls? :laughing7:

If it is a footstone...should I look for the headstone? Any ideas on how old?

Yep. Definitely a footstone...here's an old pic I have from my local historical Burying Grounds. You can see it in the lower front right, with initials JCW.

Did you happen to hear any deep tones, maybe in the nickel range :dontknow:

It's a pretty trashy area so I was getting all kind of tones. Why nickel range?
