Over the River and thru the Woods...

Had a chance to get out today for a couple of hours so I met up with a new T'net member mave2535. We headed out to an old farmstead that I've been scoping out for a few months now. We hunted an area that at one time housed some equipment and was also used to feed the field workers. The well is still open but it hasn't been used in quite some time. Mave started hitting signals right away (he definitely has the "knack" for MD'ing - very slow and methodical - he dug some pretty cool stuff) and then it was my turn. My first signal turned out to be a pre-1933 store token - all I can read on the front is 2 1/2 cents, ---- products only - and on the reverse it reads - "not good after July 31st, 1933". There are words around the edge on both sides but they are unreadable. Dug a few pieces of "junque" and then I hit a solid quarter signal showing at six inches. I dug a good sized plug and found nothing - ran the coil over it again and still had a solid signal but now at four inches. Had Chris run over it with his Prizm IV and the same thing. I widened the hole a bit and ran the pinpointer through - I finally got a hit in the side of the plug. Needless to say when I saw silver I started shaking a bit. I called Chris back over so he could see it before I pulled it out - I gently pulled the coin from the ground and saw it was a Barber quarter - 1907"D". I actually had to step back and take my headset off for a few minutes. Chris got a kick out of seeing me holding this thing with my hands shaking. Although it's not a valuable piece - it's my first "big" silver and it sure is pretty. We ended up having to leave shortly after but we'll certainly be back there soon. It was my first time MD'ing with another person (aside from my daughter) and I gotta' say, it was a lot of fun. We had a beautiful day and we didn't get skunked so I really couldn't ask for anything more. Thanks for stoppin' by and keep on swingin'...

Many thanks to everyone for the kind words...

Hopefully the both of us will have some "sweeter" finds to post as I have just received permission to hunt five different spots for a total of around 500 acres. Two spots are right on the Yadkin River here that were known to see some CW troop movement.

As far as the token goes - I gotta' thank my new hunting partner for ID'ing it for me. A few hours after going out today he called me with the info on what it actually reads. Right On Chris...

The front of the token reads: "2 1/2 cents - Sales Premium - Dr.West's Products Only. The reverse reads: "Redeemable in Cash - The Western Co. Chicago - Not Good After July 31st 1933. I have no idea how it found it's way to North Carolina, but it's here to stay now...

The hobby has now sucked him in and he is in research mode.

Half the fun of hunting is finding out what you have found. Like finding it twice!

Hope you guys have many more great finds.

Way to go. That's a neat token.. Congrats on the Barber half. I would hit that place again. :wav:

DD, congrats on your first Barber!!

That token MAY be related to the Chicago World's Fair held back in 1933. . .

Take care,

Congrats! Got my first Barber quarter last week, also 1907, and another guy in Michigan also dug a 1907 recently. AMC
