I have a question on this item. I have tried to look it up and and i know they are out there for sale. But i could careless about that. I would like to know the history of it and if it is a fake. Having a body tag is kind of creepy saying the least. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Not exactly sure how correct this is, but if I remember correctly funeral places like The Neptune Society placed tags in the urns to avoid mix-ups. Remember thinking my dad ended up being a couple cups of what looked like fireplace sweepings & almost all my relatives puking over the other rail on the other side...... Stinking land lubbers.................
Jeff did a great job in providing background info on your piece Clif.
You didn't mention if this piece was 'dug' or simply 'found', but it doesn't strike me as being dug.
When I saw it my first thought was it's a fantasy piece as well.
The 'Wells Fargo Exp. Co.' name has been used on fantasy recreations/reproductions for years to fool collectors due to it's popularity.
When I come across things like this, the one thing that makes me think "fantasy piece" is if they are fancier than they need to be. Even if Wells Fargo made a special metal tag for a crate with a body in it, I doubt they would have paid extra to have the ribbon engraving. Also for something like that you would want the crate to be very conspicuously marked, like a big stenciled on label instead of a tiny tag that would be easily missed and hard to read if you weren't up close. It's neat, but unless I saw a period photo of one in use I would think it's a fantasy piece
