Today's Finds - Hampton Beach , NH

So, one of the nicer days of the week (around 40 degrees out) my girlfriend and I decided to take a two hour drive to one of the nearest beaches to us to try and get accustom to our detector more. This being our fifth, maybe sixth time out since we got into this about two weeks ago. We hunted the beach for about three hours and this is all we came up with ...

drum roll please ...

Seven cents and some junk!

Now as frustrating as this was it's not nearly discouraging enough to make us think twice about MDing. Half the reason I wanted to make this post was to ask for general tips from seasoned MDers or anyone, the other half was to get maybe a quick laugh at a futile three hours spent on a beach in the winter. We saw a fellow MDer on the beach and I almost wanted to go up and talk to him/her ( was quite a distance away ) and ask for some tips but they seemed pretty preoccupied. Also, out of curiosity, how slow of a start have some of you had? Not that I am expecting amazing results anytime soon, I'm just a tad curious on how long it took some of you to get a "lucky" break. ;)

Take care everyone and try to stay warm!

Hey Guys!

I've hunted that beach a few times myself. You were at Center Hampton, right?

The first time a friend of mine and I went was mid July in the evening. Between the two of us, we found maybe 20 coins. I then went back another time with two friends, but it was at like 11 in the morning. Between the three of us, we found 2 coins.

Come to find out, the maintainers of that beach 'comb' the beach with their machines in the evening (after 10pm), and apparently the suck up most of the stuff that people leave behind. This explains why you didn't find much at all.

I've now officially sworn off that beach. I've had better luck north of that beach. If you follow Rte 1A north, you will pass many many smaller beaches that you may have better luck at.

Keep it up though! The treasure is out there!

Well that sure explains a lot. Haha, thanks for the info, it's good to know.

And thanks to everyone else for the replies.

Don't get discouraged by what your finding. The longer you work with your detector to learn what all the different beeps mean, the better the digs should be. I have just started this hobby in the mid summer months and the big thing everyone kept telling me is that I needed to get a minimum of 100 hours of detecting so I could learn the machine.

What machine are you using? I am using an ace 250.

Good luck and happy hunting!
Phil

Currently using the White's Prizm IV. Most likely going to buy another machine come spring so we'll be looking into that. As it is now we just switch off swinging and digging. =]

Hi,

I'm not too far from a newbie, only my 2nd year detecting seriously.

I try to find close places to detect and I'm luck in that regard as my beaches are close. Still, the beaches don't do all that well in autumn and winter. Last autumn I found a landfill site that NO ONE had detected about a haf mile from home. No big treasure there but some great times and some silver coins, half a gold bracelet engraved with a 1918 date, 1934 Worlds Fair Pin.

Also this time of the year I do more turf hunting. There's a soccer field close by that usually gets me quite a bit of change. Don't overlook the outskirts of the parks especially around trees and behind bushes.

I had relatives in Holyoke (a long time ago) and remember visiting there summertimes. I'd love to just wander around and find detecting spots. Definitely don't overlook wooded ares that may have been populated years ago.

So where are all the lobster pot pieces? :D I've detected Hampton and was informed after the fact I should have hit Salisbury Beach instead, cleaner and they don't comb. I agree the parks and ball fields will yield better "stuff", but I like the relic hunting and the history and mystery behind it. :)

If you like the "beach" hunting, try the lakes and the CT river beaches near you.

Keep digging, and have fun doing it!

Hi Jon and Dani, Welcome to arguably the best pastime in the world. One way to keep things very

interesting is to hunt differing kinds of locations - old private property (w/permission), beaches, parks,

school athletic fields , picnic grounds etc. I'm a newby to this facinating hobby (1 year and a half)

I also have a Whites (MXT) . Since I live inland most of my hunting takes place on city parks and

school athletic fields. These locations are great for lots of change and a generous amount of silver

rings. If I could say only one word that i believe to be most helpful it would be PERSEVERE !

Enjoy the hunt ---- Argentium.

Haha thanks! And trust me, we'll be doing a wide variety of hunting. You can count on that.

Re: Today's Finds - Hampton Beach , NH

Best advice I can give is to slow down. I found that in my eagerness to find something, I was speeding by and missing alot. When I slowed down to almost a stop and just checked around me, I started finding stuff! Also, go off the beaten path. Where the sand meets land, at the edge of steps, around and close to objects like lifeguard towers. Beach machines can't get too close to these and lots of times people set their stuff down.
Last is you have to have patience. The ratio of good stuff to hours spent mding is pretty low, so if you don't enjoy the process, you won't enjoy the hobby.
