Today's Finds - Hampton Beach , NH

So, one of the nicer days of the week (around 40 degrees out) my girlfriend and I decided to take a two hour drive to one of the nearest beaches to us to try and get accustom to our detector more. This being our fifth, maybe sixth time out since we got into this about two weeks ago. We hunted the beach for about three hours and this is all we came up with ...

Seven cents and some junk!

Now as frustrating as this was it's not nearly discouraging enough to make us think twice about MDing. Half the reason I wanted to make this post was to ask for general tips from seasoned MDers or anyone, the other half was to get maybe a quick laugh at a futile three hours spent on a beach in the winter. We saw a fellow MDer on the beach and I almost wanted to go up and talk to him/her ( was quite a distance away ) and ask for some tips but they seemed pretty preoccupied. Also, out of curiosity, how slow of a start have some of you had? Not that I am expecting amazing results anytime soon, I'm just a tad curious on how long it took some of you to get a "lucky" break. ;)

Take care everyone and try to stay warm!

HH

Congrats on the 7 cents!!

I'm glad you got out to hunt. I'm not a beach hunter, but there are many here and I'm sure you'll get some great advice! The way I see it - now you have a good excuse to take a vacation in the south this winter! ;D

Oh, and there's also a beach & shallow water hunting forum here. Good luck!

Re: Today's Finds - Hampton Beach , NH

You guys just keep at it, when I started 30 years ago the detector I had would not find anything but pull tabs and bottle caps. You will find out the more you go the better it gets. You will learn a little more about your detector and a little about detecting each time. Its a fantastic hobby which in a split of a second can pay highly. But just the fact of getting out in the fresh air and doing something together you will find out is just as important as finding the goodies. Good luck and stick with it you will see. Thanks Kimsdad,
I'm not sure what we are going to be focused on hunt wise come Spring, most likely it will be varied depending on any nice spots we find in the middle of no where or if we feel like detecting for jewelry/etc to get some fresh air. Today was more of a trial mode for us. Trying to learn to weed out those funky signals that I keep surprisingly losing somehow.

And those are some might fine pull tabs, I agree Golden1. Haha =]

Re: Today's Finds - Hampton Beach , NH

When I lived in town,I use to sell detectors.I had alot of people ask me what detector was needed to find the treasures like in the magazines and on television because, if the people on there could find them, they could too.
I agreed and told them that they could possibly find stuff to make the news, but the real treasure is spending quality time with someone and sharing the memories of the day.
I use to have a sign that read:
I don't sell Treasure Detectors here,but A Treasured Hobby.

You have a good start...concentrate on your signal tones and learn your machine...trust me the silver and treasures will come...sometimes you just have to dig alot of junk first....dont worry about it...we all dig junk...even the most seasoned hunters....Nice to see you out there....and as far as talking to other hunters...make sure you greet them ,but dont intrude unless its obvious they want to talk...and then keep it short...

Heh, the treasures are a perk, trust me. This is something my girlfriend and I wanted to do since we were kids and when we found out we both had a hidden interest in it we went right into it. But I agree, it is a hobby, and a fun one at that. =]

Yeah, I didn't want to intrude on their hunting grounds/time so we just went on our way. Thanks for the vote of confidence and advice though.

Wow, that must have been the same beach I hit. Good luck, and better luck the next time.

You weren't there today perhaps were you? Assuming you were up in NH for some reason.

Stick with it and you'll be hooked liked the rest of us lunatics... ;D

That's a '64 Jefferson - I'd consider that a decent find any way I could. You live in a great part of the country to MD in - get out to some old homesites and out into the woods and fields. You'll be amazed at what you could dig out there...

Thanks DD, I was looking at that specific year and was hoping to see the ' Pluridus ' typo they made. But no such luck.

Re: Today's Finds - Hampton Beach , NH

Woods hunting is my favorite.
Thats were I find my oldest coins.
Some days Im out there for hours and havent found any coins.
You Just have to keep at it. At the ocean beach during low tide
detect the waters edge for a mile or two than come back detecting a little higher.Good luck.

Thinking about heading back there sometime this week during low tide. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Today's Finds - Hampton Beach , NH

Don't get discouraged by what your finding. The longer you work with your detector to learn what all the different beeps mean, the better the digs should be. I have just started this hobby in the mid summer months and the big thing everyone kept telling me is that I needed to get a minimum of 100 hours of detecting so I could learn the machine.

What machine are you using? I am using an ace 250.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Re: Today's Finds - Hampton Beach , NH

I would get on Google Earth and find a park or grassy area near the center of an old town. Holyoke is old right? I'd see what a dime and quarter sounds like on my machine. Silver sounds similar. Then I'd go detecting and focus on the deeper & fainter signals.

Thats banner material right there!

Nah still you got a nice walk out of it, and removed some trash from nature. :)
