Yup. Superintendent called the local pd on me while detecting the huge field at the school.

They ran my id, asked if i found anything good, noted my filled holes, were impressed by the amount of garbage I was toting around and then said 'Cant be here any longer man due to how sensitive schools are. Parks and agricultural are fine with permission. Have a good day.'

Sigh. This world is crazy.

Weird, I hunt schools quite often. Typically on Saturday afternoons when parks are full.

It's always a sensitive thing.
A pastor I work with gave me permission to search his church than showed up whatched me for a bit and said that older people would think it taboo to do such things. He couldn't even find my previous holes. But I said thanks and moved to the old library across the road :) gotta make everyone happy I guess. Keep diggin

Funny thing is that people that live across the street come by and have either ignored or struck up conversation. Had a fellow and his son come by tonight asking questions, saying he was intrigued enough to get back into the hobby.

Grew up in this town, never bother anyone and I get (after checking it out) a young new superintendent freaking out. Oh well, so much for the old site.

Just another reminder that this is not the old town I left back in 1998.

Happens all the time. Don't let it get you down. There are always other places to search.

Ya just can't fix stupid. People will watch vile or obscene behavior and never say a word to the offender, but let a person participate in a good honest hobby that harms nothing if done properly, and people somehow feel empowered by trying to interfere. Makes no sense. It's almost like some idiots just get a kick out of ruining a good time. .......... Don't let it get ya down.>:(

Thanks. Pretty bummed out.
The problem is that 80 people would be fine with it and have no issue. But if 1 person decides they need to make a point or show some authority that's all it takes man. Keep your chin up and keep searching for great sites. I truly believe that everything happens for some reason and this day may be the salary of you getting on an amazing site and finding the something amazing :-) silver lining my friend, that glass is ALWAYS half full

Remember everything is bass ackwards now a days, what use to be fine to do isnt anymore.Truth is evil, lying good, etc, etc.

Very sad day.. I had the same thing happen and I went to the mayor about it and he said I could search any public city property as long as I fill the holes so the cops don't mess with me anymore in my town.. The cop told me I couldn't search anywhere without permission and was a real jerk about it funny the mayor told me the cop didn't know the laws on it. So if your not breaking any laws and it's a public school then you should be able to search there just don't go when there in school.. Any way I'm sure you will work it out good luck I'm sorry you ran into that mess it really is a downer

That's a good point. People will get their phones out and record someone dying in the street or getting beat up or mugged and never lift a finger to help or even call the cops. But they will go out of their way to screw things up for a harmless responsible person trying to enjoy his day and mind his own business. Sad world sometimes. Just feel good that you're not one of those sad people!

Went after school hours, even after the extended day program. Am planning on going after work tomorrow to the district office and speaking with him man to man, politely asking permission. Good idea or let sleeping dogs lie?

Definitely one of my fears. It is a sad day seems like in this country if one person doesn't like something that a hundred people don't mind authorities pass a law that ban people from doing things they enjoy that are harmless for that one person.

I know maybe I'm just a pessimist. But I live in a coop New York where the house rules are always changing putting more restrictions on what residents can and cannot do. Same for metal detecting, it seems like if some hiking group or bird watchers ( just being hypothetical people don't be offended) doesn't like what we're doing they complain to a higher authority and BAM, a new law banning the use of metal detectors.
Keep your chin up ask for permission show how you pick up a lot of garbage and things will get better good luck.

I only hit schools on weekends or holidays. A month ago, I drove over an hour to a school where I had found tokens and wheat pennies and didn't detect because the school was adjacent to a ball field and there were kids everywhere. I was afraid that the superintendent or someone was there and if I was told to leave, then later on I couldn't play dumb about not knowing and hunt on quiet Saturdays. I saved my chances for another day.

I'd say let sleeping dogs lie and go back on Sunday when you'll have it all to yourself!

I never hunt school grounds during school days. Not even after hours. Weekends, holidays, summer vacation, (as long as summer school is not in session). Always better to know if you're doing anything wrong. But, if you do go see him, get something in writing that you can show to mz bizzybody's hired goons. See if the issue might really be about hunting the school during the week. (Also, the weekends usually mean that mz stuckup is as far away from her school as she can get.

In all honesty, I do understand the fear around schools nowadays. Odd man, carrying a strange looking rig, wearing holsters, military knife, and what looks like a sniper rifle. Around a school? When kids might still be inside? Yeah, I might look a second time myself.

Use common sense when picking a place to hunt. If we choose a time and place that has potential for risk. Just might get asked to move along. (at the very least) Surprised you didn't get a swat tackle.

Another thought; I just bet that if ALL the people in our hobby would show up in the ballot box, there just MIGHT be a change in attitude of some of those people "protecting their phoney baloney jobs". YES MR HIGHER UP! WE VOTE TOO!!!!

I think you have a green light if you go ask the mayor I'm sure there is no law saying you can't.. I don't understand we all pay tax for that land and the up keep you should be able to come and go as you please no harm done just picking up more trash then good stuff most of the time

oh man, that was bad timing i'm thinking....maybe a talk with the super would help you out, might be worth a try!

Amazing that with all the hoods/drugs/robbers/ around they can still find plenty of time to bust the chops of the legitimate citizens,eh?......

Thanks. Pretty bummed out.

I hear ya! I got kicked out of a public park this week, and after a little research found out I can metal detect there, but no digging! What the hell is that! I was super bummed out, but wasnt gonna let that get me down. I went out on a weekend thinking no park workers would be around and low and behold the same guy came and asked what the hell I was doing. I said I checked and its ok to detect but I'm not digging. He instantly changed his tune and by the end of the conversation he said well I guess if you dig a little bit that would be ok since I see how responsible you are with your holes. I am still a little bummed, but I guess it turned out alright.
