Today's find of a lifetime !!! 1905 US 2 1/2 Gold Coin
Well it only took 24 1/2 years but I can finally cross a gold coin off my wish list. Met up with my detecting buddy Park Pirate this morning at our favorite hunted-out park. Decided to hit the hills in hope of finding an Indian head cent or two. After the first half hour I only had a Buffalo nickel. Moved a little higher up the hill and got a deep hit that sounded like maybe it could be something good. Was using the relic shovel since I thought there was still some frost in the ground. Dug out a nice 6" inch deep plug and then took another scoop out for good measure. Saw a copper coin laying about 10" down and was disappointed to pull a wheatie out of the hole. Stuck the X-1 probe in the hole and nothing else was in there so I scanned the dirt I had already pulled out and got a nice sounding hit. When I saw what the probe was hitting on I almost crapped my pants. I could see the gold reeded edge of a coin laying in the dirt. I picked it up and could see outline of Miss Liberty's head. I knew it was a US 21/2 dollar gold coin. Park Pirate was detecting down on the flats about 200 yards away so I headed down to show him my fresh find! Not sure who was more excited, Tony or me ! I just finished giving it a rinse under water and the condition in unbelievable. It was a 1905 by the way! I don't know of too many gold coins being dug in the area so that makes it extra special. Was just about ready to give up on this park as the finds are getting few and far between. Maybe I'll hit it a few more times !
