Nice morrow mtn, i dont think the other rock is anything but if it were itd be a grooved axe...check for peck/polish marks

What area are you from? I see both pieces of quartz as artifacts. Nice ones also. Not sure on the idea of the weight. Could be possible but with out seeing another 100 like examples be hard to say. Like the quartz though. Are you near any gold bearing areas?

not a ax or i would have passed out hahah its hard to show in the pic but 100% groove along front side so i guessed net weight or if i was lucky tomahawk i wish i could show it better any other opinions on large quarts piece its really nice and would love to know exactly what it is thanks everybody for responding

Well here is some interesting facts in the use of Morrow mountains. This is from an old t-net post I thought was interesting. It was from an arky report.I found.

Source Book, Prehistoric Indians of the South East. Archeology of Alabama and the Middle South.pg 64 online .
Burials

The burial positions of these individulalls was not the only unusuall thing about them_ all three had met violent deaths. The rib cage of burial 83 an adult male, had been penetrated by three projectile points. One of these was a morrow mountain while the other two had been fragmented upon impact and could not be identified. Burial 84,also an adult male was associated with 7 Morrow Mountain projectiles points. 4 Morrow Mountains were found in the thoracic cavity, 2 Morrow Mountains were firmly imbedded in the spinal column and one Morrow Mountain was found in the mouth cavity. One of the two points found in the spinal column"had entered from the front and loged in the centrum(center part of the vertebra, the other had penetrated from the rear and was embedded between two neural processes.
Burial number 85, a male adolecent had been placed into the burial pit first then a cache of artifacts was placed between the arm and body. Two bone awls from deer ulnas, one biface knife, and two Morrow Mountain projectile points. This individuall also had a projectile point firmly embedded in his spinal column.

Here is the book on line if you want to buy it. Talks a lot about pre-clovis artifacts,, You can read some on line at

thank you tnm that was unbelievably intriguing

Well it kinda puts some of these points like a morrow mountain in a perceptive we do not often think of when we see a pretty point. I hope you did not mind me posting that. You may see that point in a new light now. It sounded like to me the two men were killed for stabbing the boy in the back. The kid had grave goods even though he met a violent end.

A lot of those are canoe anchors. If you think about it, the usage of anchors would be more coming then netting fish. You can shoot an arrow really well from an anchored canoe. I would bet that is what that is, and is what a lot of those artifacts are. We find net weights a lot, and they are small. Three or four ounces, maybe. The cannot be too heavy or they are hard to work with. An anchor needs to be heavy. That is a nice find, and thanks for showing us that cool and federally outlawed stuff lol

That point in your left hand is awesome.:icon_thumleft:

Some would call the last one a preform. I have 2 spots where I can go certain times of the yr and find those type of stones. I feel like they used them as knifes till they needed a point and then changed them as to what they need them for. I found some a couple of weeks ago. One is very nice made from milky white quartz and is finished 3/4 of the way. Its my favorite. Was there a bunch of quartz pieces laying all around? If so you should really go back and pick a few of them up and take them and study the edges. You might find that they have been used as tools. Looks like you might be in the NC area. Thanks for showing them.

I have some with spurs on them 3 large ones but I sure dont know how the pic came out so clear on yours. I have smaller ones with the same style tips. I always wondered what type of tool it took to make these items seeing quartz is such a hard stone.

so you think its a spur? its definitely a awesome piece and would love to know as much as i can about it, thanks rock and everybody else, im about to post something else ive had for awhile but would like some advice and info on what it could be thank yall

Id like to know what state you found it in? And if it was in the mountains if you dont mind. I find my quartz artifacts in the mountains.

I am in Ga as well. I have done some research on them and found out 2 things. First I found a Spike which is made out of quartz. That was in one spot and it very well could be Woodland Period cause of this. The other spot the tools were probably Cataco and you can research that one if you like. Now the 1st spot I found some interesting knifes shaped like points and has a incurve at the base, these I cant find any place on the net. I found mine near caves so many periods could of lived in them and used them for hunting camps. Both were near rivers and in the mountains. I havent gone into these caves due to large animals that we have here and I dont feel like being eaten alive. You never know we might be actually in the same places. Good Luck and I look forward to seeing some more of your finds. rock

thanks rock, your cave comment makes me believe your in north ga, my family owns alot of land in Cleveland an im dyin to check it out, the only place ive searched up there is around mountain city

The small white and black pieces are arrow heads the bigger one looks like it was being worked on but I think the black rock is just a rock.

I have said before that a lot of those larger pieces could have been used as canoe anchors. We still use two light anchors rather than one heavier one. Two light ones - that light - could hold a canoe while a man laid a net. The actual net weights are smaller. They are here, at least. Tiny, considering. The size of a thumb.
