wow that was a great thread. thanks for that. mine only have a little.. thought I would have had at least some positive feedback. seems things have be come a little more negative since that post. that's the third 1 I've seen all from texas. wonder if any other florida boys have found any?

on many gulf coastal sites the natives discovered how to utilize the naturally occurring oil seepage from the gulf of mexico. there is an ocean current that runs from the gulf through the florida straits and meet up with the gulf stream that's what brings it along the east coast of the state. the asphaltum being fossil already will last a very long time. I have also found globs of asphaltum with basket weave impressions suggesting that it was transported from the beach in baskets. the method of using pine pitch mixed with charcoal ash was probably much more common and will not survive as long.

Are you sure that's asphaltum?? The patina is so thick on that piece I can't see how "tar" would have remained......!????! Coral takes up a dark, often black patina in saltwater.......
true that professor shellman, different rivers give different patinas, salt water does it blue andblack. Stjohns produces a bluish patina also, some rivers give reddish. We have a man made beach over here that has thrown up many a paleo point and various lithic debitage, lol
