First the good news. Everybody found something. Now the bad. The field got planted looks like yesterday.

Anyway, a couple tnetters and I went to my favorite *cat box* to dig today. This is the site that produced the Confederate Buckle in the mid winter. We don't go every week, that would be overkill.

Anyway, Whatdidifind, vferrari, my friend Bob, who is a local digger and I hit it for about 3-4 hours this morning. Thankfully everyone got something. Whatdidifind already posted his. Bob got a minie and a belt keeper to a US buckle. That was his first belt keeper, he has never been able to dig much Civil War in the past.

Here are my goodies. View attachment IMG_0900.jpg I haven't even had the time to wash anything off yet, but that is a belt buckle! Hooks are intact but there is all around damage to it, but not horrible. We went to another site about 25 miles from here that had some colonial activity. I did probably the best there with the Deus, a 1956 Washington quarter (why couldn't it have been Spanish?), a small round ball, two pieces of camp lead and the little brass buckle than managed to make it inside the house as shown in the photo. (Plus two shotshell bases.) Hugh will post his. He was so excited! The finds were very scattered. His "best" find was in an area polluted with melted aluminum from a burned out farm tractor. My buckle was found on top of a huge underground natural gas pipeline and I almost didn't get the double burp on the Deus. But I dug it anyway, the signal was just odd. Sometimes it pays off. We had to really "think out of the box" but it paid off.

It was a lot of fun. I really don't like going by myself anymore. Finds here are getting scarce. Woods are off limits now due to poisonous snakes, and with the fresh plantings, I suppose that's it till Thanksgiving.

Smokey is this where your going to TAKE ME ? :)

Simply said that is one beautiful buckle. Appears the group all had some fun finding stuff.

Great looking buckle, congrats on the recovery.
It sounds like once agin were a very generous host to the site.
55 acres is a sizeable chunk of land and many little hot spots can be missed for yrs of swinging a coil over it, just the right zig or zag will show the next keeper.

when the Cat is on the prowl, things seem to happen! Deb you are way past killing it! this is just plain ole murdering it! You are making a lot of much younger ones look well, not as well! Break out the Ben Gay and go another round!

Sweet hunt Smokey! Glad you are able to save the history, and it's big of you to share such a great site with others. That makes the finds that much better. [emoji106]

Good job on digging the "odd" signal....your CW relic case must be looking pretty darn good based on your recent finds! --JB

Great hunt. Plates are so very rare for me; I guess the combination of their big size and the amount of metal detecting in my area. I went to a very out of the way area the other day and saw fresh detectorist's holes. I guess nothing is "very out of the way" anymore.

I agree that hunting alone isn't as much fun and is more dangerous. I've been trying to cultivate a group of hunters down here but life is busy for most and we seldom get together. My pastor and I are going this week and I'm looking forward to that. He has a place very near Fort Stevens that has paid off in the past. Maybe a plate awaits....... got just as good a chance as anybody! Thanks for posting your finds.

Phishfarmer, the only reason we're getting stuff here at all is it is not in the history books, and the locals have been looking for the "Confederate gold" about 1 mile away. Miss it an inch, might as well be a mile!

Here's the stuff from the Virginia site from a few weeks ago. View attachment IMG_0872.jpg Hugh wanted to compare breastplates. There are some differences between them.
