Tiny brass finial & Holey Token(pics attached now)

Evenin', For about an hour today I went out to my old standby yard (late 1700-1800's house), and found this tiny brass finial, which is 1 1/8 inches tall. Even though you can't see the the threads very well in the pic, it does have threads. Any ideas of what it finalized?

I couldn't find any info on the internet about the Holey Token, but I'm speculating it was probably used in Trade Simulators when Slot Machines became illegal. Any idea on the date? Thanks in advance, Breezie

Could the finial be for a clock?

Thanks Bramblefind! It is too small to be a finial for a clock because it is only 1 1/8 inches tall. The one you pictured looks like a modern version, but according to the grid on the website, it is 5 inches tall. This finial is not much bigger around than a Q-tip. The pics of the tokens are exactly it. I wish there was more info as of date, etc. Breezie

The 'finial' looks like the center pin for a brass garden hose sprayer nozzle. Just a thought.

Nice slot machine token.

Is that threads I see on the other? Is there a hole through the center?

yw :) I read the grid for the finial I found to be marked on 1/4" squares. Which would make it about 1 1/4" long.

if those are the threads we can see in the pic a bit up from the bottom I think Daydream has it.

Bramblefind, oh, yes, you're right. I thought they were 1 inch grids. This is so skinny to be a clock finial; check out the new pic. Things like this really are not worth a hill of beans, but it bugs me not to know what it really is. Thanks BigCH; I think it is a gambling token; maybe sometime after the Roarin' 20's. I appreciate all of the help and ideas. Breezie

Thanks M&M. VaYank, could it be a leg to a small jewelry box? (Now I'm grasping; lol)

Haven't given up yet :D

The first thing I thought when I saw it was the finial to attach a lamp shade to the harp of a lamp. But I was only able to find examples of female finials that did that while your finial is male. But I did run across this -

where the decorative finials look like possibilities for an idea.

I originally said slot machine token because it looks similar to the ones with numbers on one side but thinking back I found some like this at an old theatre. If I can find them...

I don't know what it is Breezie. But if you list it on ebay as the top to a confederate flag pole and say you dug it at Gettysburg I think you could get a good bit for it. Sorry I couldn't help myself.

Re: Tiny brass finial & Holey Token(pics attached now)

The token is a manufacturer's stock arcade token. If an arcade ordered custom arcade tokens, a supply of stock tokens, such as what you found, would be supplied to the arcade while the custom ones were being made. After receiving the custom tokens, the stock tokens would be returned to the manufacturer for credit. Some arcades would opt to just use stock tokens to save money.

The id for your token, in the Manufacturer's stock token section is PHRASES, GROUP 60, GWA The value listed in my 1984 ref. is $ .05, and there are known varieties. These tokens have little value and are often sold by the pound on ebay. The description for this token is as follows: FOR AMUSEMENT ONLY (around) (no ornament) for the obverse. For the reverse: TOKEN HAS NO CASH OR TRADE VALUE (around) (open diamond) (vars.) The metal is brass. Diameter should be 19 mm and have the center hole.

There are 18 mm varieties, but yours looks to be 19 mm in your pic. The nickel plated brass variety listed for $ .10, as did the varieties without the center hole and the one with an open oval instead of the open diamond. There are other groups of similar tokens that have various shapes/symbols on the obverse in addition to the wording. I mention these things to let you know what minor things to look for to make a correct identification. If I am not correct in my selection of id/description, inform me of the discrepancy and I will then provide the proper id. These tokens would have been made over a wide range of years, but I do not know those limits.

Re: Tiny brass finial & Holey Token(pics attached now)

Thanks to all who helped; I'm marking this one 'solved,' and giving Bramble the :icon_thumleft: on it being a Clock Finial. The size and shape seem to match.

a x7: I'll take the pic of the token and place it on tokencatlog.com Thanks for the link to that site.

VaYank: You know I know you're looking for the matching earring you found last week so you can wear the pair! :laughing9: :laughing9:

BCH: Thanks to you too; I've enjoyed being on the forum with you.

CWTokenMan: A major thank you for the information about this holey stock token. Although their value is almost zero, they're fun to find them. What era/date do you think it is? Breezie

Wow thanks Breezie. You have been a great addition to this forum and I feel the same.

Thanks also cwtokenman for correcting me on the arcade token ID. I spoke a little to fast saying it was slot machine. I would love to see a link or an eBay sale you mentioned. I would also like to know the era/date. :icon_thumright:
