Looks Chinese. Showing us the characters and telling us where you found it will help tell the story.

Possibly a "tea tin" missing the top. Turn of the 20th C.

Thanks for the additional pics. I'm still thinking it's a tea canister. More likely early 20th C based on the lid. I can't find an exact match but there are plenty similar on the internet. Many have been made into electric table lamps. :icon_scratch::dontknow:
