Found this two rings at an old house this morning, one is a normal cheapo- the other has me stumped... MXT VDI a SOLID 16, wasn't going to change no matter what angle or direction I swung from. (For me many gold rings register 16) So I pull it out and WOW, a gold ring, wait a minute.... no hallmark.. so that peaks my curiosity.. then I notice on the high points of the ring it looks like the gold is worn away to reveal silver... what the??? Looks like gold, registers like gold, what might the base metal be? Anybody have this happen before?

Good finds. Hope the rings are gold or atleast gold covering silver. Keep updated on rings please.

Congratulations,

Sweet digs for sure! Congrats and keep them coming.

Your ring might be a vermeil ring.

I will directly quote PBK from one of his replies here about a possible answer for your "Gold" ring. Here's a copy/paste of his answer in another thread.

"Gold-plated sterling silver is called vermeil. Technically, the gold plating must be 10K or higher (typically, it's 14K) and be 1.5+ microns thick in order for the item to be classified as vermeil."

Best of luck out there!

I found a platinum ring that rang up as a solid +16 to +18 VDI on my MXT. Is it platinum by any chance?

im going with gold .my mxt at 16 is gold, could be the mark is worn away,i hope so.
nice finds !!!!!!!!!!.. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I just don't know - solid 16, i'm sure about that but on a couple of small spots, on high spots it looks like the gold is worn away and a silver color underneath... I guess it doesn't matter too much... I like it, looks good in my little chest of silver coins and other rings.. AHRRRRRRrrr
