Thrift store hunter status: Bush League

I spend more time looking stuff up on my iphone than a lot of people do, but a lot of times it is because if an item won't bring my minimum amount I'm not buying it. Or because I am looking at things that no one knows what they are. Or because it is a high end item and I need to know how much I can get before I spend $100 or whatever.

I do try to be discrete about it. And I am always moving, don't want to miss anything because I have my head in a phone.

I can count on one hand the number of times I have "looked something up" while I am out treasure hunting. I have on occasion, seen something that was intriguing but more money than I am comfortable spending without knowing more about it. In those instances, I have called up my wife to "google" stuff for me or even do a quick lookup on ebay.

I am just the opposite. I have a special browser on my phone set set to the non-mobile version of ebay (to get 'true' results) and it is always opened up and ready to go when I hit the sale. I found that when I didn't look stuff up, I buy really cool stuff at really great prices, then find out there are 100 of them for sale on ebay already. I guess I don't trust my own judgement.

The night before an estate sale, we usually will look at the pictures of the merch on the web and I will ebay up the sales prices of the stuff I can see and am interested in. Then I know exactly what to grab first.

My phone is constantly out but I try and be discrete about it. I know, I don't know a l lot. I won't let my ego get in the way of making a few bucks. Every day I learn more but I will never know it all and the phone is a great tool. I have walked away with $1000's of dollars in items that the "know it alls" missed. Now would I been dumb enough to carry around a laptop? No. I don't want people know I am looking up the item I just looked at either. One of my habits is to find an item I think might be worth something, then look at two more items then look it up on my phone. Sometimes if it is busy and crowded I just pick it up and hold it but most times not.

Another habit of mine is to memorized what I see in other people's hand when they are paying the cashier. Are they taking a score I missed or they just buying stuff they need? A dead giveaway something might be valueable is when you are purchasing it.

And I don't think this is a case of stalking, anyone walking around with a laptop out at a sale would be something hard to miss.

Accordselux said he kept running into the guy everywhere he goes. I was joking when I said he was stalking him. Tongue-in-cheek. :tongue3:

If he has to use a lap top . He probably doesn't make enough for a decent smart phone. LOL! I've never seen anyone carting a lap top around. That would be a big hassle.

The laptop is a bit over the top, but when I first started I was looking everything up too. I finally figured out that if I didn't know what it was and it looked cool I should.just buy it. Knowledge is the key to this game, I'm sure in a month or two you'll see him without the laptop.

I hope not. It slows him down.
