hello all

i took my two girls down to our local river where the environment agency have been using a large digger to clean it.
today though they started to widen it just under a bridge and about a hundred feet either side to avoid further flooding.
so far they have scraped 12" off of the bank and seeing the spoil i couldnt help myself.
we got four coins so far three from the 1700s and one 1907 odly at the same depth.

my girls were looking in the spoil and found the bell and the badge just with their eyes. i think the bell is the best(lucky five year old!) and the badge still has its pin.(any ideas??)

thanks shaun

Great finds! Keep taking your kids, it only gets better!

Outstanding finds, try use a bit of Olive oil on them with a Q-tip, but be gentle, it does a good job.

Great finds, and way to capitalize on a good opportunity!

The pattern on the bell seems to be one of the most commonly-used ones. My US (Michigan)-made one lacks the "R" but has that pattern, which we probably copied from 'old-country' ones.

what are the coins? how about a close up pic of just them

Nice Job There. Great Looking Old Coins .

Forget the spoil, get back there quickly & do where they have scrapped. This is the perfect depth for Celtic/Roman.

thanks everyone
im going back this evening, luckily the digger hasn't
moved today so i can do what i didn't get yesterday, unfortunately i am not as experienced as you lot and am probably missing loads. the detector beeps three times in a sweep sometimes and i am having difficulty deciding what to dig! i know you will say dig everything but it would take weeks, and soon it will be underwater :'(
crusader, any idea on the age of the bell?

thanks shaun

sorry the coins are a 1772 halfpenny, a 1773 farthing, the third halpenny all i can make out is 17 and what looks like a 3 but it cant be as its deffinately george 111. oh and a 1907 halfpenny.
i will try cleaning and get some pics, two of them are unworn but have green crust on them! or should i leave them?

Bell most likely 18th-19th century.

Try knocking the crust off with a sharp wooden point. Push sideways not straight down.

Cool finds, nice job keeping an eye out for good spots!

thanks, ive just noticed they've scraped back another large section today so i'm just hoping it won't rain this evening!
