The temperature has been above freezing the past three days, the fields thawed and some of the snow has melted off. Between 3 hours and 2 night hunts, this button is the only keeper I found but it was great being out there detecting. The button looks to be a French military button,
possibly 1790ish, I really have no idea but the French were here in this area then. Here?s the obverse.

The reverse, top inner legend reads ?AM 8 or & C?, at the 09:00 and 03:00 positions are a miniature of the obverse and the bottom inner legend says ?PARIS?. I don?t get too excited over buttons but military buttons are special. Any ID help would be appreciated. HH and thanks for looking, Mike

That is a nice Button.....I have seen that emblem somewhere ......I will think about it!!!! I like the shank of the reverse it is different.....Seeker

The flaming grenade or bomb was used on a number of French military branch-of-service buttons. This one is from the French Army "Household Corps" - Cent Guarde, Maison Militaire de L'Empereur ("Hundred Guard, Military Household of the Emperor") c. 1850's-70's.

A.M & Cie. ("A. M. & Co.") was a major French button manufacturer. The company was founded in Paris in 1853 and remained in existence until at least the 1960's.

The reverse attachment is called a "birdcage shank." Although some sources date it quite a bit earlier, in fact it was still used on some French military buttons all the way through the 19th century.

Excellent Mike!

Nice button - I found exactly the same under snow couple of weeks ago. I should check my collection if it is still there - probably you hunted in my flat? :)

That is a standerd French emblem. They used on their helmits in WW1 and 2 also.Super cool find.

Mike, Very nice button. That emblem looks very much like the one on the collar brass for the ordinance dept. of the U.S. ARMY. They called it the flaming P---- pot. Just my 2 cents. trk5capt...
