I hate being the one always asking if its an error or PMD but I've never seen one like this?! It's like the surface got pulled back and the groove fits the edge of another nickel perfectly.

Thoughts??

My first reaction was PMD, but the more I look at it the less certain I am. I just can't come up with a reason for a layer to be peeled back like that. I'll also be interested to see what the forum experts conclude.

I don't think....I know it is 100% PMD. this is what happens if you give a man a hammer a vice, and too much time. wonder what other coins he ruined.
 

Skeeterd, it is Post Mint Damage.
I think so too. die strike would show up through a planchet error.
 

Ah. All I could come up with was "premeditated destruction". Haha!
