Thoughts from an ex teller

First off, I want to say that I am a silver hound like most everyone on this forum. I love to open roll and see the white gleam back at me.

I worked as a teller for about two years in college and I always culled silver from rolls and my tray. I would never leave it in the open for the world to see. To do that, in my mind, was to lose it and rude if i would not be willing to sell it. I also sold some to a customer at spot one day because he asked for it. I also got the dirty looks from one particular guy who liked to buy from my branch. Sorry :dontknow: I was here first???

I did very well at the bank but I still spent considerable time beating pavement to find silver at all the banks in town. I also knew when I went to other banks as a regular CRHunter that I was subject to the same rules and that the tellers might have gotten to the silver first or that I would be buying a dump.

I guess I am trying to say that tellers that collect are really no different tha the non teller except that they are in a GREAT position to find silver. Sure, it's disappointing but I'm just offering a different point of view. I don't think it's fair to try and ruin a teller because they collect silver too.

What if your complaints to the managers lead to a lockdown policy of selling rolled coin to only businesses who are the really large purchasers of rolled coin??? Then we are really out of luck.

My experience is that most tellers really don't know the value or know and just dont care or have time. Only a few are keeping silver and even less are pursuing it as diligently as we, that is, opening the rolls deposited by their customers. If it is not in their tray, they don't find it.

I am long out of the banking industry so all of my hunting now is done "in the wild" and it is a blast every time. Happy hunting!

Thanks for the point of view from the the other side of the counter!

I've always been one that when I find a teller with silver who doesn't want to sell it to me I either wish them good day or make an offer to buy it. In your experience, from the other side what would be consider a reasonable offer? I usually offer 20-30% under spot.

I never really thought about what would be a reasonable offer since it only happened to me once. Myself, I would not have gone too low below spot. But hey, it's still an offer and it's stil below spot.

The way I look at it, I can always bring my offer up but, I can't bring it down! :tongue3:

Hi Local_Coins,
Since you are experienced in the field, would you mind giving us members a few pointers that we may not realize? I am always polite to begin with.

The banks I do business with are really great. I give "my" tellers scratch-off lottery tickets about once a month and buy lunch (generally Subway party-pack) at Christmas time.

At one bank, the head teller always carts my boxes to the car and I tip. The weekly "tip" money goes into the tellers "Pizza fund." Once they have enough saved, they order pizza for everyone in the bank.

Any advice on what to ask and how to ask it would be great--especially for those road trips where we are not "regular" customers.

Thank you for your consideration and HSH,
apush

Probably the best thing I could tell someone from a banker's point of view, and I see a lot of you do this already, would be to open an account at the banks where you get the most hassle. This ensures that you are covered. You won't be denied and you can dump there and they can't say a thing about it.

Usually though, you don't have to go that far. Most of the time it is just a matter of asking a different teller. I always chuckle to myself when I go to a bank a week later and the answer is yes when last week it was no.

The gift cards are something that I have done also. When I left the employ of the bank I had a lot of friends who, to this day, still work there. They know the value of the silver but would still save it for me so I would get them lunch whenever I picked up from them. I think I am going to use this at my CU because they are helpful and they seem to have a lot of silver too!

it is important to remember that the bank makes the rules and not the teller. And let me say that it irritates me to no end when I see silver in the tray and I get the "not a customer speech" (BofA anyone??) but I would NEVER complain to their superior about it. Why bother?

just curious how often your scored stuff in the tray being a teller. the reason i ask is when i retire from the military in a few years i was thinking of getting a job in a bank maybe starting as a teller. i say this because the hours aren't bad, the pay should be enough to supplement my retirement, and i figure i could score some coins in the process and just curious how often you would score? and if you ever got boxes from your bank, and if it was an easy process since you worked there or more difficult, thanks in advance. and thank you for a little insite in the teller perspective.

It is definately NOT a stretch to say that you could score something every day - not from the tray alone but from your boxed coin, too. It may not be silver but I would say should be able to find silver once a week at least. It really depends on the cash turnover at your particular bank and the amount of time you have available to search the rolls available to you. More coin = more opportunity. The best part is that the coins come to you! Hopefully the other tellers don't cull already and they could be trained to hunt for you or at least you could buy their CWR and add them to your vault until you had time to search them. Usually, when you find one, you find alot more than one! Its basically virgin ground every time you hunt a roll.

Just be prepared to become a dump bank!!!

Good luck.
