just some thoughts on different units, I started with a White Classic lll SL 8 years ago and still have it and still use it, it's a killer for beach work, wet or dry, but I'll never knock anyones choice on detectors, their all pretty good out of the box, and getting better, but here's some things I've found out the hard way, [$$$] Displays and modes and programs distract the hell out of me, gets me playing mind games when I should just be concertrating on the sound and what that's trying to tell me, it's far more accurate than any display. Depth readings are a guess at best, just to many variables involved. again, sound & raising the coil tells me what I need to know. the same pretty much applies to the symbols on disc., their a good reference point only, again, just to many variables, So what I'm saying to newbies is, buy a good low cost unit from a reliable solid company without the bells & whistles and use it, and use it alot, give it at least 2 full seasons, listen to the sound and experiment, have fun, you can, [and probably will] upgrade later, but what you'll learn will really help you in the future. Most of us have several units simply because no one unit does it all. For my first unit, $250 would be the max. just my experience.
