Took my daughter to a home I have permission to detect but only as long as she is with me. She is 8 and she only stays interested for about 45 mins to 1 hour. Anyway in 45 mins we found 5 pennies, 1 nickel, 2 dimes: newest 1988 oldest 1969.

Found some other items mostly junk and then I found a signal right before leaving that I dug and popped out what I thought was just another roofing nail. It was too big to be a common nail but I did not see what it was until I got it home and rinsed it off. I do not know what it is exactly. So maybe someone here can tell me. Thanks.

I keep thinking it's a tree marker... or, a survey marker (kinda small for that though) ... I dunno.

USGS maps use triangles to show where survey markers were left behind, and an X to show where reading were taken but no marker was left behind. I'mprolly wrong.

Wooden tool handle logo?

Gypsy - I think those screws are longer.

MATANUSKA UTILITY COMPANY, INC. (Water Company in... Alaska?)

Hey PBK you out there somewhere??? Any ideas? I don't like the idea of this being some type of orthopedic nailing device. Any help???

It looks like the plastic fasteners that hold trim, panels or molding on an automobile. They just push into a hole. Maybe the older ones were copper.

Please take no offense at me asking PBK or anyone else for that matter. I have had the misfortune of finding two other items that may have had origins that we detectorists would rather not find (post: from the grave in what is it). The thought that this might have been an orthotic nail or screw was just to upsetting to me last night. I appreciate ANY who post on this forum especially when they aren't laughing at me or making fun of me. So gypsyheart and Montanna Jim please take no offense at my post, if you did please forgive me.

My guess would be a railroad tie marker, but all I find for "MUC" is "Mount Union Connecting"

I'm with Montana Jim on this one: utility pole nail. No guess on the company, however.

I doubt that this stubby nail was used for fusing bones together. Stainless steel is used for that purpose. Copper might even be poisonous. So dont get upset. :)

only other suggestion is maybe it's just a decorative cap tac or tie tac....
then it may possibly be a monogram of a person.
maybe even a decorative monogrammed screw for a handgun or rifle of some sort.

if it's a monogram, it would make it UMC or MCU.
maybe even a decorative screw for a box or a musical instrument...

Not a bone screw that for sure as they usually have a hex head and thread like a wood screw.. Had 12 and a tee plate holding my knee together.. Also had one pop out of the skin and had it removed.. DO YOU HAVE A LOOSE SCREW? DID HAVE BUT HAD IT REMOVED!!! ;D

I got confirmation that this marker nail is from the 1920-1940 time period. Missouri Utility Company used them to mark poles they had inspected and recoated with creasote. According to a gentleman from the internet who collects these nails, it is worth somewhere between $10-40 to collectors.

Thanks to Baldingboy who helped get in touch with the guy from the internet and actually who did all the id work on this item for me.
