This rock was passed down and I'm curious as to what it is, there is a crystal like firm on it and it is shiny in places IMG_20200316_235248818.jpg

1st - I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard aimers! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

2nd - I moved ya from WHAT'S IT WORTH? over to WHAT IS IT? for more exposure.

Can you try and get a clearer photo? I can't tell many details from that but it looks like the crystals are cubic and silver colored... if so, it could be Galena. I can't say for sure without clear pictures though.

Is it magnetic by chance?

Welcome to the forum.

Speculation would seem to be pointless. All we know is it's black, partly shiny, and has some angular crystals of indeterminate size.

No indication of possible origin ('handed down' means nothing); opacity/translucency (try shining a light through it); hardness (try scratch testing it with a pocket-knife, window glass, penny or whatever and vice versa); streak colour (try scratching it on the back of an unglazed ceramic tile and blow away the dust); magntic properties (is it attracted to a magnet, and how strongly); density (is it unusually heavy or light relative to a stone of similar proportions); size (measure it, or include something for scale); or the crystal form (better pictures needed).

Are we trying to identify the top rock or the bottom three? They appear to be different rocks?
