O.K. my turn. Here is my first Whatsit post. It is obviously not complete and maybe easier to figure out if it was complete. I have some guesses but I don't want to influence anyone's answer.
One side the stamp says "ROYAL" "K&W" the other side is stamped "PAT'D" "OCT.1877" It is made out of iron and luckily I found it in nice dry soil. The long rod part is 11 inches long with no threads at the end. Diagonally across it a little over 8 inches. I don't know what else to say other than have fun with this one!
Dave.

The rod doesn't appear to be broken unless it was a clean, even break. The space between the two heads looks a little small for a roller, but it's hard to tell since it is seized up. This most certainly is by far the best theory going but still doesn't jump out as a 100 percent to me. In the spring, I should try that area again and see if there is another piece identical to what I have. For this theory to be correct, there should be two the same right? Unfortunately, my Google searches came up empty for ROYAL and K&W. Thanks every one for your efforts. Until someone comes up with something else, we will have to say that it is a washtub ringer?
Dave.

I'm sticking with school desk part. The seat goes on the rod and folds up when the student stands up. We use to get a laugh when someone sat back down in the floor when they forgot to put the seat down. Monty

What is the spring loaded heads clamp for?

Another vote for ringer. Those type springs are found in some old gun actions that predate coil spring use. Knowing when coil springs appeared would help maybe?
