This one has stumped me for years!

I have had this in my collection for over 10 years, I purchased it at a garage sale and to this day I still have yet to find out a name for it. It has the look and feel of sandstone but is much harder and it is large crystals coming out from the center point. I thought maybe it's something like a desert rose but doesn't seem likely due to the crystal formation. Any ideas?
