I have a ton of these decorative river rocks that I've collected over the years from different craft stores and I randomly just noticed this weird black marking on one. Can anyone help me? Lemme know if you want more photos or have more questions. Thanks!

Welcome Kellbrad, It looks like melted and solidified tar or plastic on the stone. As a firefighter, I have seen it many times. May be scratch and sniff it for a tar-like smell. (I know that sounds funny, but hey...?) Sub 8-)

hey! that's what I was thinking, but i even tried to scratch it with an exacto knife and it didn't leave a mark. i dunno.... its so weird. and the indentions in the rock around the top and the bottom border is smooth, as if it is a part of the rock. how else can i test it to see if its just plastic or tar?

There are many stone picked up for their uniqueness. It looks like one of the priest. I've seen many that were polished and sold. It has a symbolism type pattern it. The mark does look like it's in a depression. It does look to me that it could be painted. The paint maybe was put on it to bring out the work on it. Most of their work that ive seen would be from just stone and no paint. That doesn't mean they didn't use it. I do have some pieces that have something used on it. It doesn't look like yours piece. Now if you had found it in a creek or close to one. Then I would have you look for other ones. Good luck with your collection and welcome to Treasure Net.

It's a very good chance it's all stone. It is one of their stones. The lighter part of the stone seen in the black. It could be a deeper cut to show depth and details. It make sense to me.

The stone has obvious fossilized droppings of an ancient amphibian. This specimen was artfully composed into a hidden design ,a route of passage along the northern plain of Mt Fuji. I am unable to unleash any more information... I will leave one clue !!!! Pray to the Eagle who soars the fruited plains , and use his eyes to find the elusive yellow veins!!!! Keep all fallen stones they all have a story, learn to read them all and experience there glory.... LOL LOL LOL Cool looking find though the thing with rocks is each and every one is very interesting if you study it closely but in the end just a rock.

Might be hematite.
If you can rub just the black part on unglazed porcelain, such as bottom of toilet tank lid and it leaves red streak, its hematite.

How about obsidian? This looks to be river worn, so that would explain the smoothness of the black and the hardness as well. Nice find.

Definitely a treasure map to some priests hoard. Bob can decipher it for you. I live for these exciting rock posts. They just keep all of us on the edge of our seats just like oak island. Please post more.........

ok, I think along the fireman's thoughts. Possibly from an old firepit, campsite burn facility from a while ago.Now water worn possibly. Melted manmade material. See if you can "pop" off a tiny section of it and blowtorch test it to view flame color...
if not start with Moh's hardness scale , streak plate, etc...
