This is why I wear a Video Camera! Brass Belt Plate

Both pictures are of the same item, one with a flash and one without. I found this while detecting an old house that sits close to a military road that goes to Fort Leavenworth, KS. It was about 10" deep and is in perfect condition. I don't know much about it yet but I believe it to be a Regulation 1851 Union Sword Belt Plate (please correct me if I am wrong).

You dug it out, showed it, put it in your pouch, mumbled something then moved on....lol.....but I know in your mind your were like HELLYEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Sweet plate and you caught it on video

LMAO That is exactly what went on. Outstanding find OutBack Duo!

Great Finds... Congrats on the buckle!!!

I am always worried that if I make a big deal about a great find the land owner will come out and want to take my treasure away so I keep control of my emotions the best I can.

To be honest with you after filling my hole I couldn't detect anymore, I walked back to the car and cleaned it up a little and then sent a picture with my phone to a good detecting friend of mine. It took me about 30 minutes before I could get back to detecting after finding it.

Here is a better picture of the belt plate.

I guess I have a hard time showing excitement when I am stainding in a strangers front yard and I just pulled a very valuable artifact out of the ground. My biggest fear is that someone migh see me all excited and then come out and ask for my treasure and then ask me to leave. I think it is best that I keep a low profile and keep my excitement locked inside until I know I can express it without someone ruining my day.

The original part of the house was built in the 1840's with the newer part being completed in the 1860's. Here is an overhead view of the property and a side view of the house.

Still wondering why this isn't banner. I can't get over the shape it is in...

That has some very fine detail in it.

I must say that I thought your shadow looked like that of a Samurai at the beginning of the Vid.

Very cool.

Two great items, and a Great day of hunting. HH

Have you looked at the back of the belt plate in detail, have you cleaned it? rotating pic 90 degress and making negative, definately some man made marks visible. A "U" perhaps amidst the corrosion?

I can't see anything but my eyes are not that good. I have uploaded a high resolution photo of the back (it is 2.3Mb) to my website, feel free to download it and perform the tests you mentioned above. The picture is at http://www.mymdforum.com/back.jpg

Let me know what you find.

Im pretty sure your belt plate was made between 1865-1874 nice find:hello2:

I agree! What dates it to that period is the wing tips are below the corners instead of above the corners. Does this make it more rare since the war was about over and there wasn't a need to keep producing them?
