I guess I'm having a girly-girl moment, doesn't happen often so here goes:

Do you often pay for manicures?

I don't, and admit my fingernails are not pretty. Oh yeah, they're clean between digs, but just not, well, girly-girl nails.

The other day a woman commented on my nails, said, "OH gawd, you're nails are horrid. You need a help"

ok, this may sound mean but damnit, I didn't engage HER in conversation, she was a total stranger so I responded with, "but at least my a** isn't huge."

So all you dirt diggin, huntin' and treasure gatherin gals, do you have a nail secret to keep em lookin' good ALL the time?

Thanks.

No - no secrets - they are clean from time to time (sometimes by putting my fingers in bleach water), I have an emery board that takes off the rough edges, and I hide all the rest with a layer of nail polish that you cannot see the nails through.

Between working, camping, building, digging and playing guitar - I gave up ages ago. :headbang:

I don't get manicures because I find they don't last 2 days. I'd rather have a wonderful pedicure anyday! My nails just don't ever look good and I dont' care who thinks so!

cntrydancer, I'm with ya on the pedicures!!!!! Go w/ what ya know and can control...

ms Oroblanco...ok, yes I've done the bleach, but the after scent is well, less than desirable. But anytime time ya need a Hoosier gal to hep out w. some chores and a lil harmony backup, e-mail me!

manicure ??? whats that?

no I keep mine cut as short as possible. For one I dig too much to have high maintence nails and Two, I won't spend $40 every few weeks for one. My hubby is so lucky, cause he hears his friends complain all the time about their wives and nails and $200 hi lites.

Oh that made me think of something this one person at work almost got divorced when her husband got the credit card bill in and there was a charge for $800 it was for a massage that was suppose to make you loose weight. OMG for one my hubby would murder me first and for another thing $800 hello for that you better of got "one of those type" massages you hear about from some romance novel dude. Any rate she did not loose weight infact gained like another 20lbs. So now she goes to mexico for shots every week to loose weight and I think they are like $25 a shot...and no its not working even after a few months. Doubt her hubby knows about that one either.

txkickergirl,

that gal should invest in a metal detector and get up off the flo...cause she ain't gonna boogie like that 800 bucks no mo

I hear ya...and glad to know I'm not alone!!!!

Thanks to ALL the beautiful female souls on this board!

No manicures here! But I have longish nails "sometimes". My hobbies put a beating on the "nails" oh I mean finger nails. :D

A little trick? Weather gardening, weeding (definitely 2 different things! ), detecting, digging worms for fishing, wrenching on the truck? Scrape your nails across a bar of soap before you start.

country girl, THANK you! I think I'll buy a bar 'o soap and keep in the trunk for future treasure adventures! Good one:) You do good.

I have never liked long finger nails. I'm to active and keep them short. I keep hand sanitizer in the car, my MD pouch, and on my desk. I bluff them when I remember too. Once in awhile I'll get girlie and polish them. I do like to pamper my feet and toenails. Go figure. :tongue3: :D

Nails? Manicured? Girly-Girl look? Ha, Ha, Ha.... ;D

First off...I do so much typing, nails get in my way! I paid to have those fake nails put on before! OMG...what a joke! They were so long, I was pecking at the keyboard one finger at a time. Without long nails, I type 78 WPM! Within the week, I had soaked those babies OFF my fingers!! And they do more damage to your nails when you take them off, esp for those who wear them LONG TERM!!!

My nails grow to a certain length and when they obstruct my ability to type, I make them short again, not stubs, but enough that I am comfortable enough!!! I guess alot of that stems from my Navy days too. Females are not authorized to wear nails longer than 1/4" above the tip of the finger!! But I guess in today's times, the Navy Regs are not being enforced anymore by the looks of some of these females nails! And make-up is to compliment your complexion, not the prostitute on the corner!!! For the majority of females in the Navy, they abide by the Dress Code, but there are those that feel they are above it and it makes the rest of us look bad!!!

I've never been one of those girly-girls....I love wearing blue jeans, t-shirts and sneakers!!! I like to dress up once in a blue moon (i.e., going to a wedding or something like that)....but manicured nails...I don't need to impress anyone. I am who I am and I love who I am, if they don't, well, what can I say, they are missing out on a friendship over my non-manicured nails!!!

And when someone makes a negative comment to me (about me), well, I just smile and say, "Aw Thanks, that's the sweetest comment I have heard in awhile. So kind of you to take notice of my presence!" So Help Me God, I do and the look is PRICELESS! LMAO!!! I guess age has made me ... somewhat ... sarcastic!!! heheehehehe ::)

I'm 52, not 22! I want to look good for me, take care of my health for me, NOT for my hubby, my kids, my siblings, noone....for ME!!! If I am not happy with whom I am...how do I expect others to be?

And if my nails get dirt under them...OMG...my world will come crashing down!!! LOL...I just clean my hands and then clean under the tip and off I go!!! I don't use gloves when I metal detect...I can't stand anything on my hands, I need to feel the dirt. Gloves obstruct my ability to dig...weird huh? LOL

So tough-witties on those that don't like my nails, or if I decide to not wear make-up 24/7, choose not to wear designer clothes...I LOVE ME!!! :headbang: :hello2: :icon_thumright:

I see these young girls at work that spend half their pay checks on hair, nails, clothes that I tell them...."You just wait deary, when you start having babies, you will realize what's more important, your weekly manicure or milk for your baby!"

It's ok to pamper yourself from time to time, to feel like a woman, but come on.... Be the wonderful person you are and not what others expect you to be!!!

Heck, the first time my hubby made a comment on my hair ... I told him, "Are you wearing it? I wear it the way I like it, not the way you like it!" Sorry if that is harsh, but that's me...love me or don't!! There's the door if you want a pampered, spoiled, all about her girl!!!

So, to HELL with what others say, come back with a response that will floor them and go about your merry way. BE HAPPY WITH WHOM YOU ARE!!!

BTW, that lady that spent 800 bucks to loose weight...tell her to pick up a detector....it's a cheaper way to keep the weight off...that's how I lost alot of weight!!! Great exercise (walking, bending, stretching!!!)

Oh fer cryin' out loud. What is she, the fingernail police? Just because she can sit around without using her hands doesn't mean the rest of us don't have a life.

If I had to choose between a manicure and diggin' in the dirt with my grandkids, well, that one's easy! The grandkids come first. Period. (Besides, they're not going to notice if your fingernails aren't painted.)

I've loved *all* the posts on this thread. Women rock! :icon_salut:

Here's to worn, capable hands that find their beauty in activity :occasion14:

Nan :D

All well said!! I don't bother with my nails. I keep them short and clean them after a dig with a nail brush and some soap. I hate dirt under my nails but I guess that was because I was in the medical field and that was a no no.

Well, I just had to respond to this post. As a licensed cosmetologist back in the dinosaur days, I learned all the techniques of manicuring. Yes, I do have long fingernails and believe me they're as hard as nails. I use them for scraping, picking, pinching, grinding and as a screwdriver & tweezers. ;D When they start interfering with typing then it time for a clip. I can't stand dirt & grime under my nails when I MDing or gardening, so I wear gloves. But, if you want to keep the dirt stain off, even if you don't care for colored nail polish, use the clear on top and underneath the nail. Works for me! Also, to get the stains out without using bleach, try Goop, Ajax & Comet works good too...massage it in on the nails and work it good. Rinse well and followup with a good hand lotion massage.

Word of advice, stay away from the Far East Nail Parlors, stick with the licensed manicurists in the hair salons.

 RR

Ann, a big bravo to you and for you! Dang, you nailed it....just be happy with you. Always....but we do have our moments from time to time, or not.

pepper...what is it with us MD'er gals? It appears that the general consensus is we pamper our feet, not our finger nails...makes perfect sense to me.

rosewell born, your grandkids must adore you and think you're the bestest, most funnest grandma on earth.

River rat, I was a route sales extrodanaire rep (in my own mind) for Sebastian back in the day, so I consider myself a recovering styling product abuser. I know it's one day at a time but I think I almost got it whipped as it stands now, I'd opt for a massage over product, manicures OR pedicures!

Chicks with metal detectors...there's GOT to be a clever bumper sticker for THAT...yes?

All right ladies, the boys have started a post about "who's read this ones for the gals post" I click on it and this is what I get......The topic or board you are looking for appears to be either missing or off limits to you. ::) Now that's just not fair they can read this and we can't read that one? >:( Can we lock them out too? :D

Yea, I read that post last night...only the original poster and one other then.

I think only the original poster of this thread can lock it!!!

My nails only grow just so long then they peel off or if they have started harden they get caught and break so I just try to keep them clen since people do see them on the cash register and handing $ so keepin the dirt out from under is about it, I had a manicure once it was a gift asain ladies and that evening my nails stated to peel it was Christmas so I had her put a couple of candy canes on they were the only thing that lasted. As for a pedicure I wished, but my feet are not healthy so I have never had anyone do any thing with thm I cut the nails and once in a while granddaughter wnts to paint them! ;D The only time I wear gloves is when pulling weeds, or working with strong cleaners but, I keep some on me when detecting just in case!
