Dug this today out in the woods. I don't normally dig iron but anyway I came across this. It is octagon and appears that it could of been a barrel that exploded. The right end in second pic seems to be threaded on the inside for the first half inch then appears to be smooth or at least threads stop. Also looks like it might of had some type of set screw where it is threaded, if you can see in second pic. image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

Concrete bolt anchor?

Yeah that had crossed my mind also. This is why I don't think concrete anchor bolt. Now the threads at the end only go in about 1/2" then the bore or shaft is about 1/16th smaller. So if you were screwing another bolt into it in order to make it expand and grip the blot you were threading into it would of had to stop at half inch. Would of never created that much expansion if any at all. If that makes sense.

I would say it is definitely a gun barrel or a section of one. There is a chance that it is the breech section of a rifle barrel that burst. A rifle barrel was a hard to get item, a damaged one would be salvaged if possible. If damaged at the breech, the damaged portion could be cut off, the barrel rethreaded for the breechplug and drum and then reinstalled just a few inches shorter.

The notch for the under lug is there, pretty much cinches it as a gun barrel. Here is a picture of an under lug that is on the bottom of the barrel, and the pin goes through the wood and the lug, which then pins or attaches the barrel to the wooden stock.

The tip or point of the V shows the pin that is passing through the stock and lug to hold the barrel in place.

Yes thanks a lot everyone for all the help! You guys are good. Now that it is solved the only thing on my mind will be to get back and cover the area hard looking for any other parts. Or like l.cutler said could just be a section cut from a burst rifle. Either way I'd say it definitely worth heading back and digging all signals in general area where I found it. I will be sure and post my finds for any possible Id, breach plug ect.
