So when I first saw this at the bottom of the hole I thought it was a badge shaped like a map of the United States. :laughing7:

I was going to add it to my collection which includes a glob of lead that looks like a map of the state of Michigan and call it a day. But on closer inspection it has an interesting feature of a rounded separate piece in the middle of the glob.

I thought I would post it here in the hopes that someone might have some ideas as to the history of this lovely piece.

Thanks for looking! ;D

Ah PC thanks for playing :D

Since I'm in NY I suppose I am a bit east cost -centric in my view.

Maybe a pre-Louisiana Purchase US?

Magnet will not stick to it. My detector calls it an 80 - which is between a dime and a penny. Can't scratch it.

I might need to make it my avatar after raspberry season is over :laughing7:

Babbit metal ? This large piece was found at the site of a very old railroad depot repair shop. Babbit metal was melted & poured into the cavities where bearings were needed. When they wore out new metal was poured in again. The excess ran out onto the ground which is what gave my sample the rough texture in places where it cooled in the dirt. It's an alloy that contains lead among other metals that are added to make it wear longer and is very heavy.

Looks like slag. I find lots of it in a field by my house.

As for the US... I dunno. I know some people see Jesus in a Cheeto. :tongue3:
