Went out for a short little hour long hunt at a local park/baseball field yesterday. I didn't get much in the way of coins...only 61 cents, but I was hunting an area with not a lot of foot traffic just seeing what was down there. Found a TON of fence wire from when they built the outfield wall, and your usual can slaw and pull tabs. I did manage to find a pretty neat "Little League District Baseball" pin, probably from the 90s, as well as a nice little section of really old 2 prong barbed wire from when the park was a horse farm many years ago. The find of the day, however, is that entire piston/connecting rod assembly. That was down about 8-10" and gave my detector a FIT...it didn't know what to beep...iron, aluminum, steel, chrome moly....it's all in there! I had to dig it because it was such a strange signal. At first I thought it was the back of an artillery shell casing (looking at the top of the piston) and when I got it out I was amazed...and so confused as to why something like this was way out in the middle of a field by a baseball diamond...lol its it's a mystery! I have to clean it up and see if there is is a part number on the rod so I can see if it's ford chevy or mopar. I know these aren't spectacular finds, but they are finds nonetheless and I had a blast digging them. Thanks for looking and happy hunting!

Hi Hendo, good work on cleaning out the big metal today, maybe next time something smaller like a ring or a coin will signal out !

Thanks! Yeah I'm hoping that my efforts to get all the big junk out of the way pays off! I will be going back in a few days so we shall see:)

I can't say that i have seen a piston posted on the forum before. If you can find three or more pistons you can start to build a new engine.

Well as a professional mechanic i can tell you finding a piston/connecting rod assembly like this in a field is most definitely rare. Generally you would find something like this without the connecting rod bearing cap bolted to it I.e. it was removed and thrown into the field...but this has the rod bearing cap bolted in place as though it should be inside of an engine producing horsepower. I have yet to get any identifying marks from it...but I did manage to break some of the aluminum piston skirt while getting it out of the ground. I'm actually pretty excited about this find because I have yet to see another posted on here!!! Thanks for looking, and happy hunting:)

just goes to prove that you never know what you will find until you dig it! nice finds

My machine is not fancy at all and doesn't give me any kind of reading...it just has an arrow that points to what it thinks it might be....and this target was seriously all over the place, I thought my batteries were dying and the machine was going to meltdown mode. Man I sure am glad I dig every target or this bad boy would still be down there. About half way through my hunt some kid came up to me and told me his dad comes through here once a week and gets all the "good stuff" with his detector. Sorry pal but your dad has missed a TON of good stuff...

Keep hunting that spot and eventually you may have a whole engine.

That's strange. I was hunting a school ball field one day and dug up a bunch of old automotive chrome trim and other misc. car parts.
I was thinking there may have been a junk yard there at one time or one of those old houses with numerous cars up on blocks.

Interesting finds.

That piston is a great find in my book. May be of little cash value but it will provide a great detecting memory and story that will last a lifetime! That's what it's all about for me.
