I finally made a stand I think fits my favorite sphere. The stand is Magnesium slag with a Hematite pendant glued to the front. The sphere is Basalt/Agate.

Very nice. *nods* Interesting use for slag as well. Must have been a pleasant surprise to see that sphere come out of the ruff.

I like when industrial strength is balanced with nature.
When I looked back the agate reminded of the HAL 9000. "Good morning Rattlehead...."
I really like your approach. Did you machine the slag or were you lucky to find it? If machined, nice job.

By the way, what are the dimensions, er, measurements?

So Im interested in the slag as to how you got it in the square? I have lots of slag chunks in the area most small but it does come large once in a while. Maybe there is a use for it in stead of kicking.

I got the slag in a trade. It was already loosely cubed. I just cut it more to my liking and polished it. I don't know where it came from exactly. I would like more though! I'll have to ask the guy....

I find it in some of the creeks I hunt. It comes in white to gray and then black to brown. The black ones are stronger that the gray pieces. Here is a pic of a piece I sent to a guy that makes modern arrowheads. He made a point out of some for me and its sharp. Its a slag point

I havent been to the creeks that I find the slag in lately. If and when I go do you want me to pick some bigger pieces up for you? I go to them maybe 2-3 times a yr.

For sure. You find magnesium slag? That'd be cool. I find a lot of blue slag glass from the old iron smelting days here in Michigan. The stuff takes a great polish...although can sometimes break when working with it. Got buckets of it. I imagine I might be able to find something to offer you in return.

I will be going to one of the creeks probably next week it has been a couple of months since I have been there so maybe some good pieces have washed out by now. That creek offers the white color like the point I posted. I will let you know when I get some good pieces.
