Thinking of moving to California

Cheech,

I agree with everyone here when they say "Don't move to California!!!" I escped from there 9 years ago and moved to Georgia. It was both the best and worst move I have made in my life. Best because I was free of all the Bovine Scientology of Calif, worst because I went from a dry climate to 95 degrees and 100% humidity. I moved back west to Arizona and love it here. Still have family in Cali and have to listen to them whine about everything from politics to fuel prices all the time. Lots of good gold in Arizona as well. Desert prospecting is a bit different but not hard to get the hang of with a little time and practice.

Arizona might not have all the glitz and Glam of California but then again we don't have to pay an arm and a leg to live either. Rents, taxes and general cost of living is much lower and believe it or not, Arizona has just about any kind of climate you could want. Low desert, high desert, near alpine conditions etc etc etc. We just don't have good surfing beach yet. Once the politicians have caused California to fall off into the pacific, I'm setting up a surf shop in Yuma and am going to make a killing!

When people ask where I'm originally from, I tell them first that
I had absolutely no control over where my mother was, geographically,
when I was born.

Then I tell them I'm from that "other country just south of Oregon".

Lived in Orange County, Valencia, Long Beach and finally Van Nuys
during the 27 years I spent in that state, but had also spent as
much time in the deep desert as I could. In the desert I could finally
relax, as I was away from the noxious din of a couple million people
living too close to each other, complete with all the assorted racket
that comes with them.

Moved to WA. in '87 to live closer to the soon-to-be #2 wife. My
parents had moved up in '83, and first time I saw my parents after
arriving here I chewed out both of 'em for hatchin' me out in that
godawful place.

Moved away from the big city life (which the Seattle metro area is)
in '03, and finally found peace and quiet in a little town of 800 that's
near the base of Mount Baker and is a gateway to the North Cascades.
Day we moved in I told my wife that by coming here it added at least 20
years to my life. I'm tryin' not to let her down.

Sitting out on the back porch this evening with a cup of coffee and was
serenaded by a couple of Bull Elk bugling insults at each other across
the river. This is living life at it's best.

Cheech, big cities are pretty much all the same, and if you really want
a change then perhaps consider a smaller town in Southern Oregon.
Good gold can be found there, and you're only a hour or two from
the motherload area of Ca. I've no idea of your trade, but if you do
you're homework and are flexible I've no doubt you'll find a way to
make a living.

My two centavos...

I hate to put down any place I never lived, But must admit from everything I've read
California would be very close to the Bottom.

Of course inherently Cold States & Countries would be below Cali,
that's about it.

Thanks for all the replies appreciate all the information and yes that's my plan was to move to a smaller city for the quietness and for the scenery so thank you again just trying to get a heads up for the future no time soon I'm still kind of young but it's basically looking for retirement spot

I say can ya hear a amen as the luv of this place is in the toilet. Tesla east a Reno will rock but only 3,000 out of 6,000 jobs(in years to come) going to citizens, others transfers. In that berg it will definately help as casino biz/tourism in the toilet compared to days of old. Downtown is plain scary now with all the closures/homeless/etc. Go to Reno in the middle of winter to REALLY know the place as lasts over half the year, spent 7 winters and adios. Lotza luck in a new life ...John

I'd rather move to Syria with a cross & target on my back, then to California - The place is a disgusting pile of liberal dung, and that's the only nice thing I can say about it.

I have a different view.We need more people in calif. that might help change things, if you vote for (Change) in the Ca. government so that the lefties will leave the state. There is nothing wrong with the state in it self, we have every thing here. and for you all that left the state, We lost more votes so it is easier for the lefties to take over things. please come back we need you help. There are still a lot of great people here like Hoser John, Neo Tokyo, M.M, Oakview2,Goldenmojo and others. It is like any other state there are good places to live and not so good places, all though I would not move to Citrus Heights sorry Neo, Orangevale is much better town and I think I saw Chong here would Love to see you guys together again.Just kidding!! Bill

The Reno area is great. Reno and Carson not so much. Rural areas are much better and the economy is finally swinging up. I do have one request please don't move here and expect it to be like where you came from. Enjoy it for what it is especially if you are from ca. One thing that will make locals fighting mad is to say " in California we use to do it this way" I all ways reply then go back there and continue because it seems to have worked soooo well there.

I lived there for nearly six years, worst place I've ever lived by far. Depending on where you are in Florida you might consider north Georgia or eastern Alabama instead. Cost of living is much lower, and the locals are a damned site friendlier.

Please do. I'll be on the lookout for the video of your beheading via Isis

You should definitely do more research. Most people on this thread do not realize NorCal and SoCal are two very different worlds.

Central CA coast is very expensive unless you already have friends here who know the unadvertised apartment rentals or home purchases. :BangHead: Good jobs are scarce. Also, it's not just an ordinary drought now in CA -- this is the 3rd straight year of dreadful drought -- the worst prolonged CA drought in the 100 years since records have been kept. That equals lots of wildfires! Water rationing will get more strict also. The only way my family has managed to live in these lovely hills above ocean is because my hubby's extended family has lived in this area for many years so advised us how to live here renting cheaply -- we call it "living in the cracks", lol. It aint easy! It's near impossible if you're raising kids unless you have big savings account already. So -- visit gorgeous California both the Rockies & the coast, but don't move here unless you've got a secret back door to Ft. Knox, lol. Besides the beauty and temperate climate of this central coast, we've lived here 15 years because there's a thriving international community here so we enjoy friends of all ages and backgrounds - they're the real treasure on this coast. Sadly, crime is escalating yearly even in smaller cities, based I think on people who're addicted to hard drugs, plus gangs in many cities. Hopefully someone on this thread can point you toward specific locales in their states where they are already thriving. :icon_thumright: Good Luck! :icon_thumright: Andi

oops -- I meant "Sierras", not "Rockies", lol. Comes from my love of New Mexico's portion of Rockies where we lived 2 years. Seems like every state has natural benefits and natural pitfalls, hmm... anyhow -- Good Luck! Andi

Frank,if you have a good skill or are a tradesman, have money coming to you in the future then the California motherlode country may be for you. There is still gold here though the access to land is iffy.Property taxes are one percent of the assessed value of your home and rents are fairly high considering there are few decent paying jobs besides county, state, federal ones.Seems half the population is over 50 years of age in the gold country/motherlode areas,so if your a doctor or dentist you'll make out.The crime rate in these small towns is low compared to most places and so is the humidity. The winters are moderate unless you live at an elevation over 3000 feet.As mentioned previously anywhere you move will not be like where you came from.nor should it be.Mariposa.Tuolomne,Calaveras and Amador counties all are losing population due to the economy but are lightly populated. My county Calaveras has about 44.000 people and Mariposa is the least populated.Lot's of small towns in the gold country counties. If possible you should take a week or so and visit different areas as well as checking the endless info on the internet.

If you are talking about someplace to retire, then look at Julian, Ca. Up in the mountains East of San Diego. Small community. Gets all the seasons being at 6,000ft altitude (few inches of snow in the Winter too). Beautiful up there.

Julian was also the center of gold mining activity in SoCal at one point in time.

Mike

I'm confused...is everyone talking about the same California I live In???

It's a great place. I live about an hour from the ocean and an hour from great gold country. Yosemite and Lake Tahoe are about 3 hours away...Sunny most of the year, diverse, great food, great people...I LOVE CALIFORNIA!! Yeah it's over regulated, but they are just trying to keep the beautiful state that we love beautiful. They just go about the wrong way at times which isn't right but nobodys perfect.

So yeah if you don't like sunny beaches, bikinis, beautiful mountains, diversity, great food, gold, oh and did I say..gold then don't come to California... But if you do like those things, and can deal with a little nonsense (which is everywhere in some shape or form)...Come and Enjoy!

I don't consider my l rights "a little nonsense"..

Don't want to pee in everyones Cheerios...

I too, live in NorCal...in fact in the Redwoods of Humboldt County.

As a fact, the Victorian Village of Ferndale (Centerville) is the most westerly community on the U.S. Continent...

Here, a traffic jam is 3 cars...

Hunting and fishing is fantastic...bear, elk, deer, ducks, geese, salman, crabs, and the like...

Schools are outstanding...

Fewer gangs than southland...

And plenty of jobs...

Still California, same state laws apply, still represented by same idiots. I turned down job paying real good money 15 years ago there.

Now if Northern California broke away and formed a seperate state that would be a different story.

No doubt most of California is beautiful, I have traveled the entire state several times and camped in every National park there. I took coast line drive from Seattle to San Diego and took every scenic turn out one year...
