Sure looks like it.

We used to use green ink pens and change the numbers on bills when we were kids.

At first it looks like smeared ink, but it happens to be "smeared" right where the 5 would have been. I think you're right. How in the world did you catch that??!

I think it looks like the ink smeared. The reason I say this is because I am comparing the bottom of the number in question with the bottom of the 5 in the serial number and it looks like the curve of a 6 not a 5. Could be wrong......I hope I am. Good luck! :)

That's true, the six would have a tail at the bottom left if it was a printover.

Looks altered to me.

The 6 Definately is Curved wrong at the top.

& Also appears to be Pasted over the 5

Try checking it very Close.

The error can't happen unless it's a Smeared 6 which I Doubt,
as the lines are to straight on the top of the 5.

an Upside down 9 May have been used.

My THOUGHTS

Looks like a Bad Cut

Points up because of Bad Cut

Completly Round. 6's don't look completly Round inside

Could be because the serial # stamping machine didn't change fast enough or got stuck, and the bill was stamped twice. Not sure what machines the Mint uses that would do that. On the bright side, your bill is still worth $5. (Quick, spend it!)

The 5's in the two pics have different curves to them....don't know anything about minting, but looks like 2 different dies to me. Maybe just something stuck to the die and caused a smear.

It would look roughly like this if you place number 6 over a 5
