Not sure if this may have been used for map making or carpentry. It's pretty thick and it's only a small fragment of what ever it is. It may not even be a ruler. Not sure on this one. Hopefully one of you guys have seen one like it and can send me in the right direction. This was found in a civil war site but there has been 150 years of history since then passing over these parts so I'm not sure. But I will say it's off the beaten trail and I have not found too much stuff that was not civil war related at this site.

Try looking up cannon aiming quadrants, could be a piece of one of those. It looks to be the right thickness.

It looks really similar to something I found. I think it's part of a scale.

I have. Just have had no luck with anything in that direction. That was my first idea to.

I'd say that is real close to what I have got. I find it strange that I only found one tiny piece of what ever it is and you only found a tiny piece too. And it's pretty thick brass to be all broke up like that. Could it have been a part of a sabot or shell and exploded? I have found lots of frags and case shots and even a few fuses at this site. What type of site was yours found in? Military related?

I'm near a train depot, and there were a lot of civil war soldiers here because it was a supply depot near the University of Georgia, but there weren't any battles here. Mine has lettering on it. On one side it says "..ASSIC CI.." And the other side says "..CITY SCA.."

DirtyMike, I'm sorry to have to disappoint you, but I'm 100% certain it is not part of an artillery projectile -- no projectiles have a "linear distance" marking on them. I do not recognize it as being related to artillery in any way.

It appears to show graduations in "tenths" rather than a typical ruler's graduations in eights or sixteenths of an inch. Try putting a normal ruler alongside your find to see if the distance between the line above a number is exactly equal to an inch. If so, your find if part of a ruler. If not, it may be part of weighing scale.

Not disappointed. Just trying to figure this one out. The reason I had the idea of it being she'll related was cause it looks like it exploded

I've posted this in another thread. I would share the link, but I'm typin this on my phone. I measured the marks, and they don't match up to an imperial or metric ruler. They seem to make a lot more sense if you're using the marks to measure either angles or, like the large weighing scales, if you're measuring weight.

I've been checking scale pics and can't find a match yet. But you guys have me leaning in that direction too.

Both appear to be from beam scales. I was taking a quick look and saw several that measure in fifths, so tenths wouldn't be much of a stretch from there. I don't know if maybe they used tenths and fifths for easier math than using ounces? Pretty funny how similar the two finds are!

I'm thinking it might be from a Kilograms weighing-scale -- because I often see weight-in-Kilograms expressed in tenths, such 1.7kg, 3.8kg, etc.

I really know it's not .....But just to be safe, It's not part of a Speed Square is it?......................HH

I think you're right about it being from a kilogram beam scale. I think it's a Fairbanks scale because yours has the X above the numbers like this one.

I found something similar. It must also be a scale part as is does not match up to Metric or Standard ruler graduations. This one is heavy nickel plated brass.
