went out for a night hunt as per usual... and hit a stretch of condo's that I havent hit yet.. after yelling at kids who were hitting me with a laser pointer (I told their dad they better quit or else when he walked on the balcony) I found another guy MDing.. said there were about 4 others hitting that condo earlier in the day so the pickings would be slim (even tho as he was saying that I dug up about .30 in change in front of one of the condo chairs... so i decide he had that stretch of chairs covered and walked to the next condo where I found some more change, so thinking that noone hit this stretch of chairs yet I went all around them and at the 3rd chair I hit a good ID 42 and dug but didnt find my quarter, but found this earring... looking at it I laughed to myself 'yea right this isn't real".. so I check the back and I see it is stamped 925.. so I thought hey, at least its silver... after a few more hours out I decide to head home.. all the while looking at how shiny this earring is.. looks brand new.. so for giggles I look at the 925 on the back with my magnifying glass and its clear as day... then just for fun I try to use the side of the stone sticking out of the earring to cut my magnifying glass.. and it cuts a slice right in it... thinking that magnifying glass might not be glass... I grab a glass bowl... and I'm just scratching the heck out of it, and i check the stone and there's not a mark on it... so basically what I'm asking, is will a fake rock slice up glass? is there any other way I can test it without having an actual tester? giving the sheer size of the rock I'm almost 99% sure its fake... here's some pics...

total take for the night: 18 ptabs, 20 pennies, 2 nickels, 8 dimes, 13 quarters, this earring, and 1 samsung cell phone =)

someone just tell me I'm stupid for even thinking this thing might be real.

thanks for reading

Wow,
GuANu that looks like a pretty real diamond stud. That rock is huge!!!!!!!!!!
Take it to a jewelry dealer and have them give it a look over and maybe appraise it if it is real. I have only heard of diamonds being able to cut glass and not any other rocks.
Hope you have a winner there, it would sure be amazing if you did.
Like you though I don't want to get your hopes up.
Keep us posted I want to hear more about your find.
You always hunt at night?
Watch your back.
Very Nice Find.

Congrats on the sterling setting. As for the stone, I wouldn't get excited just yet. Many artificial stones will cut glass, and yet they are set in silver. Best to take it to a reputable jeweler and ask for a free assessment. For your sake, I truly hope it's the real deal. Your take in quarters was darn good, WTG!

Again I'd say jeweler is your best bet because even real diamonds come in many different grades. And even one that could be referred to as say 2-3 carats may still be of such low grade that its' value wouldn't be all that impressive. But on the other hand that sure beats nickles dimes and quarters. ;D

Can it be real? Well, I'd be pretty excited about it. A trip to a jeweler is definitely in order. When we were in high school, we would take our class rings and scratch the windows. None of us had diamonds for stones.

I hope it is real!

Wow, Congrats on the find. I really hope the rock is real for you! Please let us know what you find out.

Congrats (even if it is not real).
I know that if I was you when I found that rock, I would have been excited.

Some people prefer silver to gold for settings. Might be real...

Nice story - I would bet the diamond is CZ - a real stone that big would be worth quite a bit and probably wouldn't be mounted on silver.

If you're not sure of the jeweler, just tell him you lost the mate and ask if he can duplicate it and how much for the stone for it.

well either way thats a nice find! Definatley beats a penny!

Have fun,
Salvager

P.S.
My finger (and toes) are crossed for you!

One simple way to tell if it is a real diamond............or at least have some idea of wether it is real or not is to put it against some small print.........if you can read the fine print through the rock, it is fake. If it is real, everything will be distorted. One more that you can do is look at it with a magnifying glass and try to spot flaws like little black deposits (carbon).....shoot, even ski tracks if it was zapped. If you find a carbon deposit (Black little speck/dot).......it is almost certain to be real.

Kinda boggles the imagination, don't it? Sure is a pretty thing..let us know when you find out for sure.

HH,
Nat

Usually with an expensive diamond earring, the stud has a back that locks onto it or screws on. But I could be wrong! Good luck on your find!

I also think it's a CZ stone but get it checked and watch the jewler to make sure they don't switch the stone on you...Just in case!

Don't be too suprised if it is real.
My wife used to own a jewelry store and had a set like that (real) and lost one.
Ladies seem to loose their earrings a lot.
Try a payne of glass and see what it does. It will cut if it is real not scratch.
You have lots of good responses to your query!!!!
Take it to a jeweler you trust!

Oh yeah...........lucky buger! LOL
