WESTERN MASS
Well the day started with rain, but I was bound and determined to hit the site again. Man I was soaked when I got home! :D I hit the old road to the bridge, of course I had to dig the rusty rectangular piece first, start the pouch out heavy. Not too trashy, so I was happy there. Ventured off the beaten path into the lower part of the field and almost lost my sneakers in the mud. :-\ So off to the bridge, just about there and remembered Gypsy saying three trees in a circle...... so I quickly ran around those, BIG mistake, you should have seen me trying to get that looped up thing out of the ground! :D

The ground was real wet, so the signals were good, and deep. Dug a beer can at 10", how the heck did that get down that far? The little I shaped item I have seen before? Nothing there but nip bottles, from the 60's some tin, pretty clean. I did find one long rusty item, but when I had dug over two feet in length, I decided to leave it for another day.

The disc, is copper and is 50 mm, or 2" I've been cleaning it and swear there is something written on it, but who knows.

So any advice on what I "should" be doing would be greatly appreciated. There used to be an old MFG co, a post office and general store, an old school house there. Awful big site, but I am determined to keep at it.

Here is a picture of the double axe cleaned up from last week. It has some letters on it K then underneath WARRAN??? may have been more letters. Oh of course I found another splitting wedge. :D

The round thing is a buggys rein guide our def on the right track but if the grass is thick or getting tall you may have problems getting the small coins

Kim....Email me with the location of that bridge.....I might have some info for you.....nice finds....you could have a heavy layer of stone and dirt from the deconstruction of the bridge on top of the original road bed and banks....if you tackle it again ,try to hunt at the bottom of banks along road ....

You are doing nothing wrong. I always detect with the assumption that I am not the first to detect there. Just keep doing what you are doing and you will find the good stuff.

Keep at it Girlie, your bound to find the coins and other good stuff soon  Nice finds and I love those pics. Looks like a great place, quiet and peaceful. Beautiful area ;D

Nice axe. Maybe you should hunt the stream bed during a drought. Nice place.

Looks like you found all kinds of interesting goodies to me! That place is really cool....keep at it!

Great finds

Looks like your digging great stuff. Those little airline liqueur bottles make great salt and pepper shakers.

That "loopy thing" is called plumbers tape, some people not in the business call it metal strapping.

If you can find original photos or a copy of the original survey plat I would grid it off and start around the original building sites and then work towards the stream.

A picnic lunch and a day of MDing in that beautiful location, it don't get any better :)

Tex, That really makes my day knowing it is off a wagon and used for horse riens. SWEET!

Christy, on the way girl, any help would be appreciated.

So a couple of you have said to hit the stream bed harder. First stop this weekend (if it's not raining TOO hard. Hubby may have me commited if I hunt in the rain much more, I was a muddy sight. :D).

I have old Beers maps of the location (thanks again Johnny Cache) and have done the ariel view of now. The old foundation is still there for the Post office ect.. But....it's been used as a trash dump for years now >:(. I did venture out beyond and found the axe head and old compass. The field across the Rd. I hunted Sunday may have been filled, the only thing I found was the wedge. It was the location to the office of the Mfg Co., I was getting hits on the embankment down to the old Rd.

I have gotten friendly with the folks down in the little Village, they say 2 men detected it back a few years ago, but only stayed for a half hour. Tons of trash by that foundation.

Thanks for all the encouragement. I will be back there, and follow all your advice.

Gotta get back to work, but I'll be checking in! Thank you!

Kimmie,

You are wearing way too many clothes. All the zippers, buttons, snaps etc. are misdirecting your signals! It's almost summer so I would suggest a yellow polka dot bikini.

I did not read every word, yet....

Try detecting at either side of the approaching roadway to the bridge... where someone may have pulled to the side to let someone else go ahead and pass, or let oncoming go by...
And many horses spook a bit when passing from a roadway to wooden surface, so may need to be calmed down after crossing over the bridge???

just some ideas...

Looks like a very nice spot to be, finds or not!

In a place with that much area to cover, I would go over it in a non concentrated scan mode and try to find the junk signals that hint towards concentrations of people, bottle caps, pull tabs, anything to indicate traffic. I think the junk can steer you in the right direction. If I'm finding odd junk items here and there, I know I wouldn't be in the right spot for what I target. Once I start hearing and seeing/digging people junk, that is when I know I'm in an area that saw people and I will concentrate along that stuff. It all depends on what you're looking for of course.

That little round tin (upper left) looks like the thingy to put in fish bait, creates bubbles to keep minnows alive. I dont know if they still make them. What does it say on it?

I would like to see the pic of compass.

Wes? Now you wonder why I was worried about what I missed with the QUACK thing. Remember there are ticks down there! :tard: :tongue3:

rmptr, good advice, thanks. I have been wandering off the road some, but will concentrate those areas harder.

Ricardo, great advice. You are right if there were signs of folks there, then keep digging. Thanks!

I look at it this way when I dig trash at an old site I just eliminated another obstacle in my way, you'll get it cleaned up

You got that one right! I get "and why would you bring that stuff home? I'd have left it there." Well DUH, so I don't have to dig it up again the next time I'm there. :D
