Last weekend Iron Patch and Iron Horse were here for a couple days hunting. We found a couple decent sites but the finds were elusive...especially for me! I went back to one of the sites that we first hunted last weekend to give it another shot. I knew there was a decent site there and I just had to take my time. My first two targets were the pewter buttons...one with a nice design. The third target was my find of the hunt...one of the best shoe buckles that I've ever found.

Also found a few coppers including a William and Mary from the late 1600, a worn Liard and one I haven't yet identified yet. It's large and has a wreath around the edge...but nothing inside the wreath is visible. It's a heavy and thick coin... or it may be some kind of a medallion. Of course I got my share of musketballs as well...always welcome!

The final find of the hunt was the gold pocket watch back. Unfortunately it's just gold plated...

Re: The Stuff I Should Have Found Last Weekend!

You should have found? I think I was the one who spent the most time down there correctly picking out the best area to hunt.... while you stayed higher up. Right? ;D They were just saved for you because my detector rejects all good finds this year. :-\

The buckle is early!!! Tombac?

Yeah, I assume it's tombac...it read too low to be silver...

Re: The Stuff I Should Have Found Last Weekend!

Those predate all our English sites here. Being that clean the fact it's tombac wouldn't bother me at all, only negative is takes away most of the possibility of early maker marks. Will look good along side your other old one.

At first glance I thought it was silver but that would have been a surprise because it was a decidedly mid-tone...tombac suits me fine as well!

Yeah if silver it would have been a screamer. (unless on edge - then it would have been iron) :laughing7: You get the finds so I should be able to at least get a laugh. ;D Now that it's been near a week off I'm starting to think more about the couple spots we have left to check.

I was hoping to get into the second field we checked before we went to this one but the cows were still out...

Think I'd be checking just about every field around there and up and down the river. That one section we seen loaded with fields must have some early sites. Could be a whole year's digging there!

sweet early buckle! nice stuff all around!

Yep, I'll be doing some more door knocking next weekend. My plan yesterday was to start in this field and then move onto the FC house...6 hours later and I hadn't moved! Still the upper half of the field to hunt as well...that's where I found the large wreath copper, on the way back to the car.

Although the coin's would be killer for me the shoe buckle take's the cake

Super early finds!
love that buckle...
That tombac alloy holds up good.
Congrats & HH

Congrats on the Tombac Shoe Buckle romeo! :notworthy:
Amazing the amount of detail on this watch back! :o

Congratulations!
Dave
