The Rings Just Keep Comin' ; 14K & A Little Silver Too.......

So I left work today with my heart set on hunting a certain spot but I needed to get some gas to get there. As I pulled into the station, there was a particular woman headed inside that I've been avoiding for the last two weeks. Luckily, she didn't see me. She's nice enough but has some crazy idea that she and I will soon be married (after ONE date). It's a long story I won't get into here but needless to say, I left.

Since I had almost NO gas I decided to hit another much closer spot in an area where an old house once stood. Now I'm really glad that she showed up and changed my plans.

After digging some clad, trash and at least 25 pull tabs and can slaw, I was just about out of daylight and decided to dig just one last hole. The target rang up at a solid 59 which led me to believe it was yet another pull tab or possibly a nickel. Much to my surprise and delight, out of the hole popped this little beauty.......

Silver & 14K day Sept. 28, 2015 001.JPG

It's 14K and ring # 46. It was about 4 inches down in an area where I did not expect to find it at all. There are no engravings or initials so I have no idea how I could find the owner. I'll have to think about it a bit. The only marks are "KMP" (inside a diamond shape) & 14K.

Now earlier today I bought a can of Pepsi from a machine. I put a dollar bill in and when I picked up the change from the slot, I got this.....

Silver & 14K day Sept. 28, 2015 002.JPG

.....a silver Washington. So this day started out good before I even started seriously hunting for treasure. Then again, I always check my quarters and dimes and once in a very great while a little silver shows up. It's amazing that a few of these coins are still circulating.

All in all, it's been a pretty good day treasure wise. It's been a little while since any gold appeared.
These are the days we live for right??

The moral of this story is; never stop digging "pull tabs" even when you're TOTALLY sick and tired of 'em. Sometimes they just happen to be gold in a clever disguise. Oh; and always check your change. You never know when a little silver may show up and brighten your day.

That's about it.
Thanks for looking & HH........

May i ask you what sensitive did you use for the gold ring?

I have a Teknetics Delta 4000. It's not a high end unit but it's a great little machine imo. I run the sensitivity as high as I can without it chattering at all times. Ideally I run it wide open at 12. In some spots I have to crank it back to 10 or 11. On rare occasions I may have to back it to 7 or 8. Whatever works best at any given spot is where I run it.

Lately I've been hunting with no discrimination and I'll dig anything from the foil range & up. Remember, the gold is hiding right where the pull tabs ring up. On my machine 14K hits anywhere from 51 to 59 or even 60 (just like pull tabs and some can slaw). I've found one very small 18K ring and that hit at a solid 51. I've never dug gold below 49 but I understand that small gold like tiny earrings can hit way down there just like foil so I usually dig down to about 45. And yes, I've dug tons of foil.

10K can bounce all over the place depending on what other alloys are mixed with the gold. I dug a deep 10K High School ring a few months ago that was bouncing from the high 40's to the low 90's. That usually means trash but my motto is "when in doubt, dig it up".

The only true discrimination is your two eyes. Detectors make a best guess based on the conditions at hand but there are many factors in play. Depth, moisture level of the soil, mineral content of the soil, oxidation, position of the target, etc.

Aluminum soda cans often ring up as dimes on my machine. I can usually tell the difference but if it's really deep, I may dig it up just to be sure. It could be a deep old Large cent (which I have found) or a silver half (which I have yet to find). You never know until you know for sure.

So, when in doubt, dig. If you want to find gold, dig LOTS and LOTS of "trash" & pull tabs. Yeah, it's incredibly annoying digging up someone's trash but in reality, the more trash you remove from your spots, ultimately; the better shot you have at locating any treasures lying beneath the garbage.

Try not to get discouraged and never give up. I've dug thousands of pull tabs at this point but I've also gotten 8 nice gold rings and a nice 14K necklace since starting this hobby a little over a year ago. So, 9 out of several thousand seems like terrible odds and in fact; it is.

But oh what a feeling when you see that gold staring back at you from the hole. It makes removing all of that trash worthwhile. It's like you immediately forget about it when you hit that gold. Plus, you'll pick up tons of nickels along the way. They hit in the gold range as well. So at the very least you'll get a little battery money and that's okay by me.

Gold is a rare find. I've dug WAY more junk rings and jewelry than I have gold and silver but again, it's worth it to me. To me digging trash is just part of this hobby and we're actually performing a good service when we do it. It's not bad for the hobby overall either. Who can complain about removing trash from the earth and disposing of it properly??

The finds I post here are those rare finds. Many, MANY days and frankly, more often than not; I just dig the usual trash and clad which I almost never post. But I keep going back. It's the thrill of the hunt I guess.

Just remember, the more you dig, the "luckier" you'll get in the long run. People who dig more trash dig more gold.

I hope that helps.
Good luck and HH.

A Gold Ring and a Seventy Five cent Pepsi,,, who has it better than you???

We have a machine in our shop that my boss keeps stocked. They're actually only 50 cents for a 12 ounce can.

He buys the soda in bulk at BJ's. One of my jobs is unloading about 50 12 packs from his truck, wheeling them into the stock room where we keep them and stacking them. I do it about every two months.

He bought out a shop a few years ago and along with some equipment and a boatload of paper; we also got an old soda machine and a snack machine. We don't use the snack machine anymore though. We (I) switched out the bill changer three times but it still never worked right for very long. That machine is now a dust collecting shelf.

Of course, used bill changers tend to be unreliable.

Here's a copy of the registered trademark I found online:

KMP Makers Mark.gif

According to the info I have it was officially registered in 1993 but the company has been in business since 1945. It's an exact match to the one on my ring but on the ring, "14K" is also stamped inside the diamond. If you can tell me anything about it I'm all ears.
